The schools inspectorate Ofsted will ease the way it judges schools on matters of Yiddishkeit, according to an email sent to schools by Chinuch UK and seen by Hamodia.
The change will be implemented for inspections taking place after September and will allow scores of Charedi schools to pass Ofsted inspections without incident.
For half a decade, Charedi schools have been locked in battle with Ofsted about how they discharge the requirement to instill in their pupils tolerance and respect for people who are different. Ofsted has insisted that all pupils must be aware of all the protected characteristics set out in the Equality Act 2010. Charedi schools have countered that this is unconscionable and against their religious beliefs. A Lower Tribunal in 2016 came out in support of the Ofsted position, ruling that even very young children are required to have this awareness.
A Chinuch UK email informs schools that from September 2020 Ofsted will modify its position and will no longer insist that primary schools cover this teaching if they explain why they consider it inappropriate for their young pupils.
Many schools will benefit from the change. A recently published Ofsted report for Beis Rochel Manchester Girls School, which teaches pupils up to the age of eight years, repeatedly emphasises that the school fails to make pupils fully aware of all the protected characteristics. As a result the school was judged by Ofsted as failing to meet the legal regulations. Other schools across Gateshead, Manchester and London have been similarly affected and will benefit from Ofsted’s policy change.
The change brings the inspectorate in line with the Department for Education guidance which was published in 2019 but initially resisted by Ofsted.
A spokesperson for Chinuch UK said that the change was 'very welcome' and thanked Ofsted for listening to the community but cautioned that difficulties remain for many schools teaching older pupils. These schools are still faced with regulatory expectations that they cannot meet. ‘The Government and Ofsted continue to require that this teaching is covered. The difference is that there is no longer an expectation of when it is covered– so long as it is covered by the time pupils leave school’.
Schools are cautiously waiting to see written guidance confirming the position shared by Chinuch UK, and to see actual changes taking place in live inspections. All but emergency inspections have been suspended until January 2020. Nonetheless, the news has received a broad welcome across the spectrum of Charedi schools.

6. Tashlich] For those who want to participate in tashlich rituals, extra care should be taken to limit the risks of transmission.
That means:
Do – There should be no more than 6 people to perform tashlich unless your household or support bubble is larger than 6 people. Where that is the case, your entire household or bubble can participate, but no additional people can join you, this is against the law.
Do –You must maintain social distancing of 2 metres, or 1 metre with additional mitigations if this is not possible, from people outside of your household.
Don’t – You should not share any items to be used in the ceremony, such as prayer books or breadcrumbs.
Do – If events are arranged to facilitate more people being able to perform tashlich, they should follow the same guidelines for Gathering outside listed above.
