Off course, everyone agrees that "Buy and Forget" is NOT a strategy for individual stocks, if you own individual companies you have to be in top of it every quarter to see if it still aligns with your individual strategy.
Though show me where long term buy and hold during any period of 15 years where the market haven't had new highs? I
If you have a plan, there's actually very little risk regardless "what" you own, if you can stick with your plan
Everyone's risk profile is different, for instance I own very risky companies, one of them is even in real bankruptcy risk running out of cash next year etc
For me though it's very little risk, let me explain if you ask people, what if your investments are down 20% for the next 3 years? Is that a risk to you?
Than ask what if your investments are down 50% for the next 3 years? I think most people will say it's too much risk for them to handle
For me I'm young, I have IY"H years and decades before I retire, so i am still in the early-stage phase on my investments, so I'm specifically looking for early stage businesses, and them being down over the next 3 year is zero risk for me, actually the more they're down the better (as long the business continue to perform obviously).
So to end, Identifying your goals, and choosing your investments accordingly. Risk tolerance is very different for everyone, and so is potential reward so I kind of agree with your last point
