[spoil]Are Covid Vaccines Riskier Than Advertised?
There are concerning trends on blood clots and low platelets, not that the authorities will tell you.

By Joseph A. Ladapo and Harvey A. Risch
June 22, 2021 1:09 pm ET

A remarkable aspect of the Covid-19 pandemic has been the frequency with which unpopular scientific ideas, from the theory of laboratory leaks to the effectiveness of masks, were initially dismissed, if not ridiculed, only to resurface later in the world. dominant thought. Differences of opinion have at times been rooted in disagreements over the underlying science. But the most common motivation has been political.

Another thought reversal may be imminent. Some scientists worry that the safety risks of Covid-19 vaccines have been underestimated. But vaccination policy has relegated their concerns to the periphery of scientific thought – for now.

Historically, the safety of drugs, including vaccines, is often not fully understood until they are deployed in large populations. Examples include rofecoxib (Vioxx), a pain reliever that increases the risk of heart attack and stroke; antidepressants which appeared to increase suicide attempts in young adults; and an influenza vaccine used in the 2009-2010 swine flu epidemic, suspected of causing febrile seizures and narcolepsy in children. Real-world evidence is valuable because clinical trials often recruit patients who are not representative of the general population. We learn more about drug safety from real evidence and can adjust clinical recommendations to balance risks and benefits.

The Vaccine Adverse Event Reporting System, or Vaers, which is administered by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the Food and Drug Administration, is a database that allows Americans to document adverse events that occur after receiving a vaccine. . The FDA and CDC say the database is not designed to determine whether events were caused by a vaccine. That is true. But the data can nonetheless be evaluated, taking into account their strengths and weaknesses, and that’s what the CDC and the FDA say.

Vaers data for Covid-19 vaccines shows an interesting pattern. Among the 310 million Covid-19 vaccines administered, several adverse events are reported at high rates in the days immediately following vaccination, then drop sharply thereafter. Some of these adverse events could have happened anyway. This trend may be in part due to the tendency to report more events that occur soon after vaccination.

The database cannot tell what would have happened in the absence of vaccination. Nonetheless, the large clustering of some adverse events immediately after vaccination is concerning, and the silence around these potential signals of harm reflects the policy surrounding Covid-19 vaccines. The stigma of such concerns is bad for scientific integrity and could harm patients.

Four serious adverse events follow this arc, according to data directly from Vaers: low platelet count (thrombocytopenia); non-infectious myocarditis or inflammation of the heart, especially in those under 30; deep vein thrombosis; And the dead. Vaers records 321 cases of myocarditis within five days of vaccination, dropping to almost zero in 10 days. Previous research has shown that only a fraction of adverse events are reported, so the actual number of cases is almost certainly higher. This tendency to underreport is consistent with our clinical experience.

Analyzes to confirm or refute these results should be done using large datasets from health insurance companies and healthcare organizations. The CDC and the FDA are surely aware of these data patterns, but neither agency has recognized the trend.

The implication is that the risks of a Covid-19 vaccine may outweigh the benefits for some low-risk populations, such as children, young adults, and people who have recovered from Covid-19. This is especially true in areas where community spread is low, as the likelihood of disease depends on the risk of exposure.

And while you would never know from listening to public health officials, no published study has shown that patients who have been infected previously benefit from the Covid-19 vaccination. That this is not easily recognized by the CDC or Anthony Fauci is an indication of how deep the entanglement of pandemic politics is in science.

There are however signs of life for scientific honesty. In May, the Norwegian Medicines Agency reviewed records of the first 100 reported deaths of nursing home residents who received the Pfizer vaccine. The agency concluded that the vaccine “probably” contributed to the deaths of 10 of those residents through side effects such as fever and diarrhea, and “possibly” contributed to the deaths of 26 others. But this type of honesty is rare. And it is rare for any vaccine to be linked to deaths, so this unusual development for mRNA vaccines warrants further investigation.

The battle to regain scientific honesty will be difficult in US anti-Trump policy in the spring of 2020, which has turned into social media censorship. Reports often lacked intellectual curiosity about the relevance of public health guidelines or why a minority of scientists strongly disagreed with dominant views. Scientists have argued for or against Covid-19 therapies while maintaining financial relationships with product makers and their foundation benefactors.

Public health authorities are making a mistake and endangering public confidence by failing to report the possibility of harm from certain side effects of vaccines. There will be lasting consequences of mixing political partisanship and science when dealing with a public health crisis.

[spoil]CDC panel finds 'likely' link between mild heart inflammation in adolescents and COVID-19 vaccine
BY NATHANIEL WEIXEL - 06/23/21 01:53 PM EDT

A Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) safety panel said there is a "likely association" of mild heart inflammation in adolescents and young adults after they were vaccinated with an mRNA COVID-19 vaccine.

The initial cases of myocarditis, inflammation of the heart muscle, and pericarditis, inflammation of the membrane surrounding the heart, reported on the federal government's tracking system were generally mild, especially compared to traditional myocarditis, scientists said.

Most cases have been mild, with symptoms like fatigue, chest pain and disturbances in heart rhythm that quickly clear up within a day or so. CDC scientists said they will need to follow up with patients in the months ahead in order to get a complete picture of the impact.

"Clinical presentation of myocarditis cases following vaccination has been distinct, occurring most often within one week after dose two, with chest pain as the most common presentation,” said Grace Lee, chairwoman of the CDC's vaccine safety committee.

Officials said they are tracking about 1,200 initial reports of the rare heart inflammation following doses of mRNA coronavirus vaccines have been filed with the federal government's Vaccine Adverse Event Reporting System (VAERS), though they have not yet been definitively linked to the vaccines.

Most reports came from people in their late teens and early 20s, and many more occurred after the second dose than the first.

There were more cases in males than females, and the cases essentially disappeared in older age groups.

The agency said there have been 267 cases of myocarditis or pericarditis reported after receiving one dose of the mRNA vaccines and 827 reported cases after two doses through June 11.

But the reports are preliminary, and do not mean the health issues have been linked to the vaccine. The database is meant as a repository of all events observed after vaccination.

There were 323 confirmed reports of myocarditis and pericarditis for people under the age of 29, which is the group CDC is investigating. Among those confirmed, 218 people have fully recovered. Nine people were hospitalized, with two in intensive care as of June 11, according to the CDC.

There have been about 300 million vaccine doses administered nationwide.

Scientists have emphasized this occurrence is rate — for both mRNA vaccines combined, there were 12.6 heart inflammation cases per million doses.

The highest confirmed rate of myocarditis and pericarditis was about 20 cases per 1 million doses with Moderna's vaccine, compared to 8 cases per million for Pfizer’s.

Officials emphasized that the benefits of vaccines outweigh the risks, and noted that for every million doses of mRNA vaccine given, there are far more COVID-19 cases and hospitalizations prevented compared to the number of potential myocarditis cases.[/spoil]

[spoil]Pfizer COVID-19 vaccine linked to rare blood disease - Israeli study
A spokesperson from the hospital stressed that this study, which was very small, should in no way deter people from vaccinating and encouraged anyone who has not yet been inoculated to get the jab.
By MAAYAN JAFFE-HOFFMAN JUNE 22, 2021 21:33

The Pfizer coronavirus vaccine has been linked to an increased chance of developing thrombotic thrombocytopenic purpura (TTP), a rare blood disorder, Israeli researchers said Monday.
TTP is an autoimmune disease that causes blood clots to form in various organs of the body. According to the National Institutes of Health, these clots can limit or block the flow of oxygen-rich blood to key organs like the brain, kidneys and heart, resulting in serious health problems.
Researchers from the Institute of Hematology at Shamir Medical Center said they were alerted to the problem after seeing a sudden increase in TTP in the country – four cases detected in one month compared to two or three cases per year.
The medical team said they found a “chronological connection” between the vaccination of the patient and the onset of symptoms of the disease. They stressed that these are both new patients and patients whose disease flared up after a long period of remission.
The Health Ministry is currently evaluating the research and until the evaluation is complete, the doctors were asked not to interview.
As a result of their research, the medical team, led by Dr. Maya Koren-Michowitz, head of the Hematology and the Translational Hemato-Oncology Laboratory, recommended that people who have had TTP only get vaccinated with special permission from their doctor – and if they do vaccinate, to have a follow-up clinical evaluation.
“Physicians and patients need to be alert to the clinical symptoms: weakness fatigue, neurological disorders, hemorrhage and chest pain,” the team said in a release.
They also called on “healthy people” who are vaccinated to be vigilant and seek medical help immediately if symptoms appear. Early diagnosis and modern treatments have increased TTP patient survival rate from 10% in the past to 80% today.
A spokesperson from the hospital stressed that this study, which was very small, should in no way deter people from vaccinating and encouraged anyone who has not yet been inoculated to get the jab.[/spoil]

Italy’s right seizes on teen’s death linked to Oxford/AstraZeneca vaccine

[spoil]Italy’s right seizes on teen’s death linked to Oxford/AstraZeneca vaccine
National and regional governments disagree over where responsibilities lie after controversy over vaccine ‘open days.’

The death of a teenager who developed blood clots after having the Oxford/AstraZeneca vaccine is igniting a political storm in Italy — with most of the fire coming from the right.

At issue is the practice of regional health authorities running vaccination "open days" as a way to get rid of unused Oxford/AstraZeneca doses. Some regions took this route despite a national government recommendation that the jab should "preferably" be used only for those aged over 60, for whom the risk is lower.

Rome is now getting heat for not being clear enough.

Camilla Canepa, 18, got the shot on one of those open days, organized by regional health authorities in Liguria, and quickly fell ill. Despite undergoing surgery twice, she died on June 9. An autopsy later revealed she died from a brain hemorrhage 16 days after the shot. It was also later revealed that she suffered from an autoimmune disorder, which should have disqualified her from receiving the vaccine.

But medical authorities administering the shot were apparently unaware of her prior condition.

The national health ministry is now in the crosshairs, as regional executives accuse Rome of generating confusion by failing to issue precise guidance. Meanwhile, the right is tapping into the outpouring of public grief to attack the government for incompetence and shirking responsibility on setting guidelines.

Matteo Salvini, leader of the far-right League party, called for an end to open days and said it was "absurd" to use children as young as 12 "for experiments."

"Who authorized mass vaccines?" he asked on Rete 4 television. "Is there a minister of health?"

"The government is incapable of managing the pandemic and vaccine campaign, in particular communications, and of taking tough decisions," Marcello Gemmato, a pharmacist and lawmaker with Brothers of Italy, another hard-right party, told POLITICO. The health ministry "must be clear and non-contradictory or it does a disservice to Italians," he said.

As it happens, Health Minister Roberto Speranza is an especially attractive target for the right, as a member of a small left-wing party, Article One. He has been the punching bag for the right for months, repeatedly dueling with Salvini over coronavirus restrictions.

Risk assessment
The tragic episode is just one more black eye for the Oxford/AstraZeneca vaccine, which Italy had initially cleared for under 55-year-olds. In March, however, anxiety over the safety of the adenovirus jab surfaced after the vaccine was linked to a small number of blood-clot related deaths, including three in Italy, among younger people. Most EU countries temporarily suspended use of the vaccine until the European Medicines Agency gave it the all-clear after examining safety data.

Following the EMA's decision, Italy’s national drug regulator, AIFA, cleared the shot for all adults but recommended “preferential use” in the over-60 age bracket, effectively flipping its earlier stance. Other countries took similar measures. France, for example, recommended its use for those over 55, while Denmark suspended use of the shot altogether, donating doses abroad.

Italy, however, took a more muddled approach. While the national recommendation held, some regional governments, faced with unwanted excess doses, went ahead with “open days” that opened up vaccination for younger people, allowing them to skip the line, despite safety warnings from some experts.

It was just one example of how Italy's decentralized health system, which has devolved considerable powers to the regions, sometimes confounded the pandemic response, with regions pursuing policies that sometimes clashed with each other and with Rome.

Amid the public outcry after Canepa's death, both regional governments and the national health ministry found themselves on the back foot. On June 11, the health ministry said the Oxford/AstraZeneca vaccine should be used only in those aged over 60, basing the decision on revised recommendations from AIFA’s technical scientific body. That statement represented a move away from its previous "recommendation" of the shot for the older age group.

As for people under 60 who had a first dose of the Oxford/AstraZeneca vaccine, the government said, an mRNA vaccine, namely BioNTech/Pfizer or Moderna, should follow as the second jab.

Alessandro D'Amato, a health administrator in the Lazio region, told La Repubblica that clearer guidance was needed, and faulted AIFA's latest opinion as imprecise.

It needs to say “yes or no," D’Amato said, adding that more clarity on the Johnson & Johnson vaccine, another adenovirus jab, is also needed.

For their part, both national and regional authorities are pushing back.

Giovanni Toti, governor of the Liguria region, defended the open days on grounds that AIFA signed off on them. AIFA's director Nicola Magrini, for his part, told La Stampa that the regions were to blame for going it alone. The improving pandemic situation, meanwhile, had further shifted the risk-benefit calculation away from distributing the Oxford/AstraZeneca jab to younger people.

The EMA’s own vaccine strategy head, Italian Marco Cavaleri, also entered the fray. In a separate interview in La Stampa, he took the same line as Magrini, arguing that given the availability of other vaccines, regions should have taken a “more cautious approach” on the open days.

Color me skeptical
Aside from the regulatory muddle, critics have pointed to the controversy's impact on vaccine skepticism. While not as widespread as elsewhere in Europe, Italy has long struggled on this front. A study linking vaccines to autism, later discredited, caused not only a decline in vaccine coverage between 2013 and 2016, but a measles epidemic. And a major political party, the 5Stars, tapped into these sentiments for years, although its stance has softened during the pandemic.

Gemmato, of the Brothers of Italy, accused the national government of flip-flopping and "acting on emotion," thereby stoking unwarranted fears. "They have made the public afraid for no reason," he charged.

Vincenzo de Luca, president of the Campania region, also warned that trust in the state had been "severely compromised."

The death "radically changed the level of trust, sensitivity and willingness of citizens in relation to the vaccination campaign, creating a level of confusion that risks jeopardizing the vaccination campaign itself," de Luca said, shortly after his government temporarily banned the Oxford/AstraZeneca jab for all age groups.

Even though Italy’s vaccination campaign has generally been going strong, the country can't afford a setback, experts say. The new restrictions on the Oxford/AstraZeneca vaccine are likely to create supply issues, particularly for regions with younger populations such as Campania. More broadly, Italy may struggle to reach herd immunity in some areas — roughly pegged at 70 percent of the population or higher — if the doubtful remain unconvinced.

As one local example: Following Canepa's death, only 50 people booked for an Oxford/AstraZeneca open day that was planned for 1,440 in Naples, where the jab is still available for older Italians.

Francesco Vaia, director of health at the Lazzaro Spallanzani National Institute for Infectious Diseases in Rome, pinned the blame on "too many errors in communication" and poor timing rather than bad faith. But he insisted all the approved vaccines are valuable.

"There are no premier-league and second-division vaccines," he said in comments to journalists last week. "All the ones we are using prevent serious illness and hospitalization and all have some adverse effects."

The benefits continue to outweigh the risk, he added: "It has always been clear that some could provoke adverse reactions. Is it a reason not to get the vaccine? No."

For his part, Prime Minister Mario Draghi, who got the Oxford/AstraZeneca vaccine as his first dose, decided not to take any chances. He's set to receive a different jab for his second dose due to a low-antibody count.

Italians of all ages concerned about mixing jabs, however, are free to receive a second shot of Oxford/AstraZeneca if they wanted, he said.

Unlike the prime minister, however, ordinary Italians have no way of making sure that their antibody count is sufficiently high to inform their decision. While some are rushing to get tested at private clinics, according to virologist Massimo Galli, many others will be left scratching their heads as to which vaccine to get after the barrage of confusing messages.

[spoil]Officials: 1.6% of COVID Deaths Have Occurred in Breakthrough Cases in 2021
Of the more than 6,500 COVID deaths, just over 100 have involved fully-vaccinated individuals
Published June 10, 2021 • Updated on June 10, 2021 at 7:40 pm

As Illinois prepares to move into Phase 5 of its coronavirus reopening plan, state health officials say that the number of so-called “breakthrough” COVID hospitalizations and deaths remains low among those who have been fully vaccinated against the virus.

According to the latest data from the Illinois Department of Public Health, a total of 413 fully vaccinated individuals have been hospitalized because of COVID so far in 2021. Of those patients, 106 died either of COVID or from complications related to the virus.

Those 106 deaths represent 1.63% of the total number of coronavirus deaths that the state has confirmed so far in 2021. According to IDPH data, a total of 6,524 residents have passed away due to COVID so far this year, with 23,014 confirmed deaths during the pandemic.

The CDC defines a breakthrough case of COVID as a case involving a person who tested positive for the virus at least 14 days after becoming fully vaccinated, and hadn’t tested positive in the preceding 45 days.

Even as Illinois moves into Phase 5 of the state’s coronavirus response plan, officials are still urging as many residents as possible to get COVID vaccinations. More than 51% of Illinois adults are now fully vaccinated against the virus, with more than 68% of adults having received at least one dose, according to officials.

Those numbers continue to rise just as coronavirus cases, deaths and positivity rates continue to drop in the state. According to the latest IDPH data, just 1.3% of COVID tests have returned positive results in the last week, and hospitalizations are at a low watermark since the first surge in virus cases occurred last spring.

COVID vaccines have been proven to be largely effective at preventing symptomatic COVID infections. According to Mayo Clinic, research shows that the Pfizer vaccine is 95% effective in preventing those infections, and the Moderna vaccine is 94% effective.

The Johnson & Johnson vaccine is 66% effective at preventing symptomatic infection, and 85% effective at preventing serious illness after contracting the virus.[/spoil]

Exclusive: Teen Suffers Severe Heart Damage After Second Pfizer Dose, Mother Says Hospital ‘Clueless’ About Reporting to VAERS
Laura Mallozzi, whose 18-year-old son developed myocarditis two days after his second Pfizer vaccine, said she would never have connected the dots between the vaccine and her son’s symptoms if she hadn’t read about the condition in The Defender.

By Megan Redshaw

Laura Mallozzi’s 18-year-old son, David, was hospitalized with myocarditis on June 10 — two days after his second dose of Pfizer’s COVID vaccine.

According to Mallozzi, David, from Indiana, felt pressured at work by his employer and co-workers to get vaccinated.

“They were uncomfortable that he wasn’t vaccinated,” she said. “So he got the COVID vaccine without telling me.”

Mallozzi’s other son, now 16, had an adverse reaction to his measles-mumps-rubella (MMR) vaccine when he was younger, and has not been vaccinated since.

After David’s first Pfizer dose on May 18, he experienced a sore arm but was otherwise fine, and told his mom he got the vaccine.

The day after his second dose, on June 8, David experienced a headache, nausea and reduced appetite, followed by fever and chills in the evening. He soon developed intense sharp pains on the right side of his body toward the middle of his back, Mallozzi said.

“The next day [June 10], he was sleepy the whole day. He took several naps and went to bed at 7 p.m. with a 104-degree temperature,” Mallozzi said.

David woke his mother at 4 a.m. the next morning because he was having intense heart pain and difficulty breathing. In an email to The Defender, Mallozzi said she wouldn’t have realized what was happening to her son if it weren’t for an article, “Pfizer Vaccine ‘Probably’ Linked to Heart Inflammation, Israeli Panel of Experts Concludes,” she read in The Defender newsletter.

“I shudder to think I might have sent him back to bed with an Advil and some Vicks VapoRub because I never would have guessed that an apparently healthy 18-year-old would be experiencing a serious heart injury from a vaccine,” she said.

Mallozzi took David to the emergency room and told the doctor her son was experiencing an adverse reaction to the COVID vaccine. Although hospital workers took her son’s information, the mother and son were ignored for hours. They finally left because David needed to lie down.

David’s pain seemed to subside, but later the next day it worsened, so Mallozzi took her son to the emergency room for a second time. “This time I didn’t mention the vaccine,” she said.

Immediately they took him back, did an EKG and ran scans. The results were consistent with a heart attack. David was suffering from severe heart damage.

“They said my son had profuse heart damage, admitted him overnight and did an ECHO,” Malozzi said. That’s when she informed doctors that the symptoms developed after David’s second Pfizer shot.

She also told them about the study in Israel showing a possible link between the vaccine and myocarditis.

“The doctors began connecting it to the vaccine because I was connecting it to the vaccine,” Mallozzi said. “But here’s the thing — if I hadn’t read that article I would not have connected it to the vaccine.”

Doctors told Mallozzi they’re not sure how long it will take David to recover, but with other viruses that cause myocarditis, patients have to be monitored by a cardiologist for 18 months to two years.

Mallozzi said:

“David is not allowed to exert himself. If he moves around too fast he has chest pain. My son is like an 80-year-old heart patient and he can’t walk. He cannot walk and exert himself because his heart can’t pump enough blood. It cannot keep up with any type of exercise, including walking.

“The slightest exertion will cause chest pain and he is very fatigued most of the time. The doctors said they expect him to get better over time with rest, but for the past week we haven’t noticed any improvement. Maybe it will be easier to see improvement month to month versus week to week. We will hope for that.”

Mallozzi has a message for other parents questioning whether their child should have a COVID vaccine: “Don’t do it.”

She said:

“It is not worth the risk. Who knows if it’s effective. The Pfizer vaccine is not safe. I’m really concerned about all of the college students going back to campus and these universities mandating vaccines because a young person is not going to think they’re having heart damage.”

David also regrets getting the vaccine — and his doctor told him he cannot get any more COVID vaccines.

Heart problems caused by COVID vaccines aren’t being reported to VAERS

Mallozzi, like many other parents, had a difficult time figuring out how to report her son’s vaccine injury to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s (CDC) Vaccine Adverse Events Reporting System (VAERS).

She said:

“I was assuming it would be reported by the ER doctor who evaluated, diagnosed and admitted my son to the hospital. The hospital receptionist was clueless. The clerk who answered the phone for the records department was clueless, but did eventually say the hospital typically doesn’t report to VAERS.”

The hospital records clerk suggested Mallozzi contact her son’s primary care doctor, but the doctor’s office staff had never heard of VAERS and found no record of David’s case having been reported.

Mallozzi said she was concerned that cases of myocarditis are being under-reported. While her son was being discharged from the hospital, his nurse commented that three other cases of myocarditis were admitted that same day.

“My son’s nurse said she was used to seeing about one patient a year with myocarditis and now, since the COVID vaccines, she is seeing a significant increase in myocarditis patients.”

Mallozzi said:

“VAERS is not working for this particular issue because emergency room physicians don’t typically report and our primary care doctor had never heard of VAERS. My son got his vaccine from Walgreens. Walgreens isn’t following up with him to ask if he has any adverse events and I would have never thought heart damage could come from the vaccine.

“It is frustrating that it is ending up being my responsibility to make sure this report is made.”

The Defender provided Mallozzi with the steps for filing a VAERS report. She was given a temporary VAERS I.D (563354) after filing her report.

In an interview with The Defender, Dr. Hooman Noorchashm, a surgeon, immunologist and patient safety advocate, said, “VAERS is extremely cumbersome and doctors are not required to enter complications into VAERS. If doctors reported adverse events to VAERS, we would have a much more robust system.”

According to the latest data from VAERS, there have been 1,117 cases of myocarditis and pericarditis (heart inflammation) in all age groups reported in the U.S. following COVID vaccination between Dec.14, 2020 and June 11, 2021. Of those, 109 reports occurred in children 12-to-17-years-old with 108 attributed to Pfizer.

WHO: ‘Children Should Not Be Vaccinated for the Moment’
In updated guidance, the World Health Organization said children have milder disease compared to adults and there is not enough evidence to recommend vaccinating children against COVID.

By Megan Redshaw

The World Health Organization’s (WHO) latest guidance clarifying who should get the COVID vaccine states, “Children should not be vaccinated for the moment.”

According to the WHO website: “There is not yet enough evidence on the use of vaccines against COVID-19 in children to make recommendations for children to be vaccinated against COVID-19. Children and adolescents tend to have milder disease compared to adults.”

The WHO had previously said vaccinating children against COVID was not a priority given the limited global supply of doses, Fox News reported.

During a social media session June 3, Dr. Kate O’Brien, a pediatrician and director of the WHO’s vaccines department, said children should not be a focus of COVID immunization programs, even as increasing numbers of wealthy countries authorize the shots for teens and children.

“Children are at [a] very, very low risk of actually getting COVID disease,” said O’Brien. She said the rationale for immunizing children was to stop transmission rather than to protect them from getting sick or dying.

O’Brien added it wasn’t necessary to vaccinate children before sending them back to school safely.

“Immunization of children in order to send them back to school is not the predominant requirement for them to go back to school safely,” O’Brien said. “They can go back to school safely if what we’re doing is immunizing those who are around them who are at risk.”

The U.S., Canada and European Union have all given the green light to some COVID vaccines for children 12 to 15 years old. In the UK, a decision to vaccinate all 12- to 17-year-olds is unlikely to be recommended by experts anytime soon, BBC NEWS reported.

One argument for not vaccinating children against COVID is they get relatively little benefit from it.

“Fortunately one of the few good things about this pandemic is children are very rarely seriously affected by this infection,” said Adam Finn, who sits on the UK’s Joint Committee on Vaccination and Immunisation.

Infections in children are nearly always mild or asymptomatic, which is in sharp contrast to older age groups who have been prioritized by vaccination campaigns.

A study across seven countries — including the U.S. — published in the Lancet, found that fewer than two out of every 1 million children died with COVID during the pandemic.

Even children with medical conditions that would raise the risks of COVID infection in adults are not being vaccinated in the UK. Only those at “very high risk of exposure and serious outcomes” are recommended to be vaccinated.

For kids, benefits of COVID vaccines don’t outweigh risks

As The Defender reported, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) on June 10 held a meeting to discuss granting Emergency Use Authorization (EUA) for COVID vaccines for children under 12. Numerous experts spoke out against the plan saying the benefits don’t outweigh the risks for young children.

Peter Doshi, Ph.D., associate professor at the University of Maryland School of Pharmacy and senior editor of The BMJ, said during the open public hearing session there is no emergency that would warrant using EUA to authorize COVID vaccines for children.

Pointing to Pfizer’s trial of 12- to15-year-olds which supported the recent EUA, Doshi said the harms outweighed the benefits, and those who had the placebo were “better off” than those who received the vaccine.

In terms of the benefits, Doshi said “the reported 100% efficacy in Pfizer’s trial was based on 16 COVID cases in the placebo group versus none in the fully vaccinated group. But there were about 1,000 placebo recipients so just 2% got COVID. Put another way, 2% of the fully vaccinated avoided COVID, whereas 98% of the vaccinated wouldn’t have gotten COVID anyway.”

On the other side of the ledger, Doshi said, side effects were common:

“Three in 4 kids had fatigue and headaches, around half had chills and muscle pain, around 1 in 4 to 5 had fever and joint pain. The list goes on. In sum, all the fully vaccinated 12- to 15-year-olds avoided symptomatic COVID but most wouldn’t have gotten COVID even without the vaccine. So, the benefit is small but it came at the price of side effects that were mild to moderate in severity and lasted a few days.”

Doshi pointed to data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) showing 23% of 0- to 4-year-olds and 42% of 5- to17-year-olds have already had COVID and have robust natural immunity.

Kim Witczak, an FDA consumer representative, expressed great concerns over the premature approval of COVID vaccines for children. Witczak said data shows children are neither in danger or dangerous, and the growing evidence of harm caused by COVID vaccines should not be ignored.

Witczak and Doshi were two of 27 researchers and clinicians around the world who launched a citizen’s petition demanding the FDA withhold full approval of COVID vaccines until efficacy and safety measures are met.

Dr. Sidney Wolf, founder and senior advisor of Health Research Group, also pointed out during the FDA meeting that CDC data from Jan. 1 to March 31 showed only 204 hospitalizations and 0 deaths in the 12- to17-year-old age group due to COVID.

As The Defender reported May 26, two papers recently published in the journal of Hospital Pediatrics, found pediatric hospitalizations for COVID were overcounted by at least 40%, carrying potential implications for nationwide figures used to justify vaccinating children.

COVID vaccine causing heart inflammation in teens

Dr. Tom Shimabukuro, deputy director of the CDC’s Immunization Safety Office, said during the June 10 FDA meeting, “there are ‘very few’ reports of myocarditis or pericarditis in 12- to 15-year-olds who have been given coronavirus vaccines.”

However, the CDC data Shimabukuro presented showed a higher-than-expected number of cases of heart inflammation among young people recently vaccinated with their second doses of mRNA vaccine. The agency identified 226 reports that might meet the agency’s “working case definition” of myocarditis and pericarditis following the shots.

Among 16- to 17-year-olds through May 31, 79 cases of myocarditis and pericarditis were reported. The expected rate among people in this age group is between two and 19 cases, Shimabukuro said during his presentation.

CDC data also showed that among 18- to 24-year-olds, there were 196 reports of myocarditis and pericarditis. The expected rate is between eight and 83 cases.

The CDC’s Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP) scheduled an emergency meeting for June 18 to update data and further evaluate myocarditis following vaccination with Pfizer and Moderna vaccines. However, the CDC delayed the meeting until the June 23-25 ACIP meeting in observation of the Juneteenth National Independence Day holiday. Register here to watch Wednesday’s meeting.

Another horrifying story! OSU student, elite athlete + member of ROTC developed severe heart complications following his second dose of Pfizer’s COVID vaccine.

Currently, Pfizer’s COVID vaccine is authorized for emergency use in people as young as age 12. Moderna is authorized for people 18 and older, although the .company has asked the FDA to authorize its use in children as young as 12. Johnson & Johnson’s vaccine is authorized in people 18 and older.

EDITOR’S NOTE: After this article was published on The Defender June 22, the World Health Organization (WHO) edited its latest guidance on who should get the COVID vaccine by removing the sentence: “Children should not be vaccinated for the moment,” and instead saying that a panel of experts had found the vaccine “suitable for use” by children over the age of 12. Here’s a side-by-side comparison of the WHO website page as it was before it was updated and how it looks now. The red hairline box was added to highlight the sentence that was removed.

Michigan teen’s death days after COVID-19 vaccination being investigated
Updated Jun 23, 4:51 PM; Posted Jun 23, 4:51 PM
By Justin P. Hicks | [email protected]

A 13-year-old Saginaw County male died last week, three days after he received his second dose of COVID-19 vaccine.

The teen’s death has been reported to the U.S. Centers For Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), and is under investigation by federal health to determine if there is a correlation between the death and vaccination, according to the Saginaw County Health Department.

County health officials did not identify the teen, or include details pertaining to the cause of death. They were notified of the death by the county medical examiner on Thursday, June 17, and put out a brief statement Wednesday afternoon, June 23.

Because the teen was recently vaccinated, his death was reported to the CDC’s Vaccine Adverse Event Reporting System (VAERS) for further investigation.

“Loss of life in an adolescent for any reason is heartbreaking,” reads a statement from the health department. “Health officer Chris Harrington, MPH, and medical director Delicia Pruitt, MD, are mothers of children near the boy’s age, so it hits close to home for them.”

As of Wednesday, the VAERS system did not include an entry for a Michigan teen who died in June.

Michigan has gotten a first-dose vaccine to 328,675 residents ages 12-to-19, and a second-dose shot to 265,905 individuals in that age range.

Comparatively, there have been 141,865 confirmed cases of COVID-19 in youth 19 years and younger since the start of the pandemic, and at least 16 residents in that age range have died from their illness.

The CDC’s independent advisory group of vaccine experts met Wednesday to discuss reports of myocarditis -- inflammation of the heart muscles -- in adolescents and young adults within days after getting vaccinated. The CDC estimates that the condition is occurring in about three cases per million after a first-dose shot, and 16 cases per million after a second dose.

While rare, health officials are investigating further due to the increased occurrences versus the typical year. In the meantime, federal regulators continue to recommend eligible individuals get a coronavirus vaccine, “given the risk of COVID-19 illness and related, possibly severe complications, such as long-term health problems, hospitalization, and even death.”

Shots are available throughout the state for individuals 12 years and older. For more information, visit the state’s COVID-19 vaccine website.

Creator of mRNA Vaccine Technology Tells Tucker Carlson: ‘Government Not Being Transparent’ About Vaccine Risks
Dr. Robert Malone told Tucker Carlson we know the vaccines pose risks, but it’s hard to assess them because the government isn’t capturing the data “rigorously enough,” so we don’t have the information we need to make a reasonable decision.

By Children's Health Defense Team

In the segment below on last night’s “Tucker Carlson Tonight,” Fox News commentator Tucker Carlson interviewed Dr. Robert Malone, creator of mRNA vaccine technology, about his opinion that COVID vaccines are unsafe for certain people, and how YouTube censored him for discussing vaccine safety.

YouTube took down an episode of the Dark Horse Podcast that featured an interview with Malone, despite Malone likely being “the single most qualified person on the planet” to discuss vaccine risks, Carlson explained. “He helped create the mRNA technology used in COVID vaccines.”

Malone told Carlson he’s concerned about vaccine safety in young people who are at low risk of becoming seriously ill or dying from COVID.

Malone’s comment followed news this week that within 24 hours of the World Health Organization (WHO) updating its guidance on who should get the COVID vaccine — with this statement: “Children should not be vaccinated for the moment” — the WHO removed the statement. The revised guidance now says the vaccines are “suitable for use” by children “over the age of 12.”

Malone told Carlson:

“One of my concerns is the government is not being transparent with us. I’m of the opinion that people have the right to decide whether to accept vaccines or not, especially since these are experimental vaccines. This is a fundamental right having to do with clinical research ethics.”

We know there are risks, but it’s hard to assess them because the government isn’t capturing the data “rigorously enough,” Malone said. “We don’t have the information we need to make a reasonable decision.”

Malone said the risk-benefit analysis has not been done.

“Normally, at this stage, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s Advisory Committee on Immunizations Practices would’ve performed those risk-benefit analyses,” said Malone. “They would be data-based and science-based. They’re not right now.”

Carlson also highlighted a Norwegian study linking the Pfizer vaccine to deaths in nursing home residents.

The study found that out of the first 100 reported deaths in nursing home residents who received the Pfizer vaccine, 10 were “likely” due to the vaccine. An additional 26 deaths were “possibly” caused by the vaccine, said the study authors.

CDC reports 4,115 breakthrough COVID-19 cases involving hospitalizations or deaths
Cases reflect small percentage of 150 million people who are fully vaccinated
By Alexandria Hein | Fox News

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has received reports of 4,115 patients with COVID-19 vaccine breakthrough cases who were hospitalized or died. Of those cases, 26% of hospitalizations were reported as asymptomatic or not related to COVID-19, and 19% of the 750 fatalities were reported as asymptomatic or not related to COVID-19.

The data, which includes information through June 21, is amid a backdrop of 150 million people who are fully vaccinated in the U.S. Nearly half of the breakthrough cases, or 49%, involve females, and 3,124, or 76%, occurred in patients ages 65 years and older.

Officials have long predicted vaccine breakthrough cases would be reported, as "no vaccines are 100% effective at preventing illness in vaccinated people." The agency has also warned there would be a "small percentage" of vaccinated people who get sick, require hospitalization or even die from COVID-19.

"The number of COVID-19 vaccine breakthrough infections reported to CDC likely are an undercount of all SARS-CoV-2 infections among fully vaccinated persons," the agency noted. "National surveillance relies on passive and voluntary reporting, and data might not be complete or representative. These surveillance data are a snapshot and help identify patterns and look for signals among vaccine breakthrough cases."

The agency noted that "no unexpected patterns" have been identified in the reported breakthrough infections. It also states that vaccines remain effective and everyone ages 12 and older who have not received it should get one as soon as possible.

FDA adds warning about rare heart inflammation to Pfizer, Moderna Covid vaccines
PUBLISHED SAT, JUN 26 2021 9:57 AM EDT UPDATED SAT, JUN 26 2021 10:01 AM EDT Emma Newburger

KEY POINTS

  • The U.S. Food and Drug Administration on Friday added a warning to patient and provider fact sheets for the Pfizer and Moderna Covid-19 vaccines to indicate a rare risk of heart inflammation.
  • For each vaccine, the fact sheets were revised to include a warning about myocarditis and pericarditis after the second dose and with the onset of symptoms within a few days after receiving the shot.
  • Health officials said the benefits of receiving the vaccine still outweigh any risk. There have been just 12.6 heart inflammation cases per million doses for both vaccines combined.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration on Friday added a warning to patient and provider fact sheets for the Pfizer and Moderna Covid-19 vaccines to indicate a rare risk of heart inflammation.

For each vaccine, the fact sheets were revised to include a warning about myocarditis and pericarditis after the second dose and with the onset of symptoms within a few days after receiving the shot.

Myocarditis is the inflammation of the heart muscle and pericarditis is the inflammation of the tissue surrounding the heart. Health officials said the benefits of receiving the vaccine still outweigh any risk.

“The risk of myocarditis and pericarditis appears to be very low given the number of vaccine doses that have been administered,” Janet Woodcock, acting FDA commissioner, said in a statement.

“The benefits of Covid-19 vaccination continue to outweigh the risks, given the risk of Covid-19 diseases and related, potentially severe, complications,” she said.

The FDA update follows a review and discussion by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices meeting on Wednesday.

There have been more than 1,200 cases of a myocarditis or pericarditis mostly in people 30 and under who received the shots, according to presentation slides from the CDC meeting.

About 300 million shots had been administered as of June 11, according to the CDC. There have been just 12.6 heart inflammation cases per million doses for both vaccines combined.
