Coronavirus self-isolation period, extended to '10 days' by UK chief medical officers
It has increased from the previous guidance of 7 days

The self-isolation period for those with coronavirus symptoms or a positive test in the UK has now been extended to 10 days,
But the people who were close to that person, have to isolate for 14 days, as till now.

New evidence shows that people with the virus who are mildly ill or are recovering have a "real possibility of infectiousness between seven and nine days after illness onset."

A statement published today from the four chief medical officers in the UK states: "In symptomatic people COVID-19 is most infectious just before, and for the first few days after symptoms begin. It is very important people with symptoms self-isolate and get a test, which will allow contact tracing.

"Evidence, although still limited, has strengthened and shows that people with COVID-19 who are mildly ill and are recovering have a low but real possibility of infectiousness between seven and nine days after illness onset."

The announcement from England's chief medical officer, Professor Chris Whitty, continued: "We have considered how best to target interventions to reduce risk to the general population and consider that at this point in the epidemic, with widespread and rapid testing available and considering the relaxation of other measures, it is now the correct balance of risk to extend the self-isolation period from seven to 10 days for those in the community who have symptoms or a positive test result.

"This will help provide additional protection to others in the community. This is particularly important to protect those who have been shielding and in advance of the autumn and winter when we may see increased community transmission."

Health Secretary Matt Hancock previously hinted at the change, and told Sky News this morning: “This is a decision that’s clinically led. The chief medical officer will be setting out details later today.

“I can’t steal his thunder but what I will say is we will always do what is necessary to protect people and we’re guided by the clinical judgment, by the science in this.”

It comes amid health leaders’ fears of a “second spike” and an ongoing row over 14-day quarantine measures put in place for travellers returning from Spain.

Advice for those who have been in close contact with someone with the virus is expected to remain unchanged.

NHS guidance currently states that people must self-isolate for 14 days if they live with, or are in a bubble with, someone that has symptoms or has tested positive or they are contacted by NHS Test and Trace.

Meanwhile, Mr Hancock will make a speech later in which he will set out what the government is calling the NHS People Plan - which includes suggestions staff could use messaging services such as WhatsApp so patients can have quick and easy access to information.

People from different households in Greater Manchester, parts of East Lancashire and West Yorkshire, will be banned from meeting each other indoors from midnight, Health Secretary Matt Hancock has said.

Mr Hancock said "households gathering and not abiding by the social distancing rules" was a reason for the stricter rules and it was in order to "keep the country safe".

He said: "We take this action with a heavy heart but unfortunately it's necessary because we've seen that households meeting up and a lack of social distancing is one of the causes of this rising rate of coronavirus and we'll do whatever is necessary to keep the country safe."

Mayor of Greater Manchester Andy Burnham welcomed the measures, which he said would be reviewed on a weekly basis.

Mr Hancock added: "We're constantly vigilant and we've been looking at the data, and unfortunately we've seen across parts of northern England an increase in the number of cases of coronavirus.

"So, today, I held a meeting of the Government's Gold Committee and working with local leaders, including, for instance, Andy Burnham the mayor of Greater Manchester, we've decided that we need to take action across Greater Manchester, East Lancashire and parts of West Yorkshire.

"So, from midnight tonight (Thursday night) we are banning households meeting up indoors."

Households can go to restaurants, bars and pubs, but 'new guidance will make clear that two households should not visit venues together'.

The further easing of coronavirus restrictions in England - due to come in this weekend - has been postponed for at least two weeks,
amid concerns over an increase in coronavirus cases.

Casinos and bowling alleys will remain shut, with Boris Johnson saying it was time to "squeeze the brake pedal".

Wedding receptions of up to 30 people were meant to be allowed as part of the changes, but cannot yet happen.

Face coverings will be mandatory in more indoor settings, such as cinemas.

And people attending places of worship will also be among those required to wear face coverings, in a change that will be applied from next weekend.

The rethink follows new restrictions for people in parts of northern England, after a spike in virus cases.

At a news conference in Downing Street, the prime minister said progress against coronavirus continues, with the daily and weekly number of deaths falling, but warned that some European countries are "struggling" to control it. The UK must be ready to "react", he said.

Highlighting the latest figures from the Office for National Statistics, he added: "The prevalence of the virus in the community, in England, is likely to be rising for the first time since May."

That means venues such as casinos, bowling alleys, skating rinks and remaining close contact services must remain closed until 15 August.

Indoor performances will also not resume, pilots of larger gatherings in sports venues and conference centres will not take place, and the planned expansion of wedding receptions to allow up to 30 people will not be permitted.

Spectators were due to watch the first two days of two county cricket matches, while fans were at the World Snooker Championship when it started on Friday. The tournament will now go ahead without spectators until at least 15 August, which is when the final is schedule to begin.

Separately, face coverings will be compulsory in more indoor settings where people are likely to come into contact with people they do not know, such as museums and places of worship, from next weekend. They are already required in shops, banks, airports and other indoor transport hubs.

The prime minister said the rules for face coverings would become enforceable in law from 8 August.

More than 900 people in the UK, tested positive for coronavirus in 24 hours
There has been a spike of new cases across the UK

The number of people who have received positive coronavirus test results in the UK in the last 24 hours, has risen by more than 900 people - a six-week high after lockdown measures were eased.

And there have been nine further deaths, according to official government figures.

The number of laboratory-confirmed cases in the UK rose on Monday by 938 - the highest figure for six weeks. This brings the total number who've had a positive test result to 305,623.

By comparison, on Monday last week there were 678 new infections in 24 hours. And yesterday, there were 789 people who tested positive for the virus in the UK.

There have now been a total of 46,210 deaths in the UK associated with coronavirus, according to officials.

Separate figures published by the UK’s statistics agencies show there have now been 56,400 deaths registered in the UK where Covid-19 was mentioned on the death certificate.

In Greater Manchester on Sunday, a major incident was declared by officials who had seen a rise in numbers.
From Thursday night, people living in Greater Manchester had been urged not to meet other households in their homes or gardens in an effort to bring down the numbers.
Similar measures apply in parts of Lancashire and Yorkshire.

Job Retention Bonus:

Employers will be able to claim a one-off payment of £1,000 for every employee they have previously received a Furlough grant for under the Coronavirus Job Retention Scheme (CJRS), and who remains continuously employed through to the end of Ja‌nu‌ar‌y 2021.

To be eligible, the employee must have received earnings in November, December and January, and must have been paid an average of at least £520 per month, and a total of at least £1,560 across the three months.

As the employer, you will be able to claim the bonus after you have filed PAYE information for Ja‌nu‌ar‌y 2021, and the bonus will be paid from Fe‌br‌ua‌ry 2021.

More detailed guidance, including how you can claim the bonus online, will be available by the end of September.

If you intend to
claim the Job Retention Bonus you must:
ensure all your employee records are up to date accurately report employees’ details and wages on the Full Payment Submission (FPS) through the Real Time Information (RTI) reporting system

Travellers arriving in the UK from dozens of countries no longer have to self-isolate for two weeks from Friday.

The rules are being relaxed for arrivals from 75 countries and British overseas territories.

However, Scotland still requires people travelling from Spain to quarantine - unlike England, Wales and Northern Ireland.

The Foreign Office's advice against taking a cruise holiday remains in place.

People arriving in the UK from France, Italy, Belgium, Germany and dozens of other countries no longer have to spend 14 days in quarantine.

But people who arrived from those countries at an earlier point in the last two weeks will still be expected to complete their period of isolation, the government said.

On Friday, the UK government changed its advice for Serbia, no longer allowing travellers to return without quarantining.
