(FOX 2) - Have you gotten your flu shot this year?
If the answer is no - and I'm not getting one! - you're not alone. A new study finds more than 40 percent of Americans have not been vaccinated and, in fact, don't plan on it either.
This is despite the warnings, potential dangers, and last year's record-number of flu deaths. The survey was done by the National Opinion Research Center at the University of Chicago.
People under the age of 45 were the least likely to report being vaccinated.
photo
The top three reasons why they didn't want the shot were: bad side effects; thinking they'll get the flu from the shot; or thinking it doesn't work.
Some think the side effects are worse than the flu itself, but that's just a myth. Usually the only side effect is a sore arm.
It's also a myth that getting the vaccine gives you the flu. The flu vaccine is inactive and cannot cause the infection. If you do get sick after getting the vaccine, it's just a coincidence.
And while it is true that the vaccine doesn't work 100 percent of the time, the benefit is that it lessens the severity. If you do still get the flu you're 60 percent less likely to need treatment.
Last year's flu season, keep in mind, was particularly severe. More than 900,000 people were hospitalized and more than 80,000 people died. Many were adults older than 65, but also 180 children died from the flu.
Last year's flu season also really didn't peak until January-February, and even extended into March, so it's not too late to get the shot. It takes about two weeks to kick in to full effect.

GOP Rep.-elect, a doctor, backtracks on controversial vaccine comments
After drawing a link between vaccines and autism earlier this week during a town hall with constituents, incoming Republican congressman Mark Green of Tennessee partially walked back those comments Wednesday following an uproar over the scientifically inaccurate statements.
“Recent comments I made at a town hall regarding vaccines have been misconstrued,” Green said in a statement obtained by HuffPost. “I want to reiterate my wife and I vaccinated our children, and we believe, and advise others they should have their children vaccinated.”
On Tuesday, the congressman-elect, a medical doctor, told the group assembled in Franklin, Tennessee, that "there is some concern that the rise in autism is the result of the preservatives that are in our vaccines."
"As a physician, I can make that argument and I can look at it academically and make the argument against the [Centers for Disease Control], if they really want to engage me on it," Green added, in video obtained by The Tennessean, after he had pledged to "to stand on the CDC’s desk and get the real data on vaccines."
Green, who was elected last month to represent Tennessee's 7th Congressional District, was referring to a belief that has grown in recent years stemming from a debunked 1998 study that drew a link between vaccines and autism. The study was eventually retracted and the doctor who conducted it lost his medical license. Despite this, the CDC has recorded a steady rise in the number of children who are not receiving vaccines or exempt from school vaccination requirements.
Even after the congressman-elect's follow-up statement became public, he continued to face backlash, including from members of his own political party.
Sen. Lamar Alexander, R-Tenn., tweeted Thursday: "Vaccines take deadly, awful, ravaging diseases from horror to history."
"Vaccines save lives," he added, attaching video of himself speaking about the topic in the Senate Health, Education, Labor and Pensions Committee. Alexander made no specific reference to Green in the post, however.
Later Thursday, the Tennessee Department of Health released a terse statement on the subject.
"Vaccines do not cause autism. Vaccines save lives," it read. "The Tennessee Department of Health welcomes discussion with Tennessee clinicians and scientists who would like to examine the evidence on this topic."
Green, who received his medical degree while in the U.S. Army, served as a flight surgeon and later founded a health care company. After a stint in the Tennessee State Senate, he was nominated to be Secretary of the Army by President Donald Trump in April 2017, but withdrew his nomination amid controversy surrounding past comments in which he likened being transgender to having a disease.

Golf Game Tips Come with Anti-Vaccine, Anti-GMO Propaganda
https://www.acsh.org/news/2018/12/10/go ... anda-13659
You don't come to this website for (bad) golf tips. Instead, you come here for our take on the latest scientific and consumer issues of the day. Trust us. It's better that way.
Likewise, people who sign up for golf tips probably aren't looking for bad health advice. Yet, that's exactly what they got -- as well as an unhealthy dose of conspiracy theory -- in a recent newsletter sent out by Golf Game Tips.
Judging by its website, which dispenses golf advice in a free newsletter, its purveyors make money through product placements. That's a perfectly fine business model (if indeed that's what it is); everybody needs to make money somehow. But it becomes a big problem when they peddle false health information and products that are downright dangerous.
Golf Game Tips Come with Anti-Vaccine, Anti-GMO Propaganda
One of the site's recent newsletters began with this whopper:
"This generation may be the first whose life expectancy is shorter than its parents..."
What?! Life expectancy has been increasing steadily for a very long time. In the 1960s, the average American could expect to live about 70 years. Today, it's nearly 79 years. The recent dip in life expectancy is likely due to the surge in opioid-related (i.e., fentanyl) deaths and suicides. But that dip represents just a tiny drop in an overall upward trend in life expectancy.
The rest of the above sentence from Golf Game Tips was just as bad:
"...and GMOs play a big role in this disturbing development."
Oh no. On the contrary, a massive literature review found that GMOs are safe for people and the environment. But it gets worse. Far worse.
Dr. Patrick Gentempo and Jeff Hays have teamed up again. They are the force behind the ground-breaking series Vaccines Revealed.
Patrick Gentempo is a chiropractor and anti-vaxxer. Jeff Hays is a filmmaker and anti-vaxxer. They're both unapologetic conspiracy theorists. Vaccines Revealed features Andrew Wakefield, the doctor whose medical license was revoked because he fraudulently linked vaccines to autism, and Robert F. Kennedy, Jr., who is so out of touch with reality that he believes conspiracy theories about the assassination of his uncle.
Anyone who spreads lies about vaccines has blood on their hands. Listening to anti-vaxxers can get you or your loved ones killed. It really is as simple as that. And anti-vaxxers should not be trusted on anything, especially on matters of public health.
A World of Casual Lies
We live in a world where scientific facts are simply matters of opinion. As I've written previously, "[W]hen a society can no longer distinguish truth from lies, that serves as a flashing red warning light that it may be headed toward decline."
The good news is that decline is a choice, which means that we can put society on a better path if we choose to. That might mean, in this case, to get your golf tips from somebody else.

Anti-vaxxers make social media a misinformation minefield, says expert
Immunisation expert Dr Nikki Turner says while parents are entitled to say no to immunisation, they needed to trust in the information given to them by their GP.

Immunisation expert Dr Nikki Turner says while parents are entitled to say no to immunisation, they needed to trust in the information given to them by their GP.
Scaremongering on social media is putting parents off vaccinating their children, a top expert has warned.
The Immunisation Advisory Centre director Dr Nikki Turner said well-meaning parents were falling foul of misinformation, choosing to believe the hype over their own doctors.
But it wasn't stopping parents in the top of the south, as Nelson Marlborough Health just recorded its highest level of vaccinated children.
Ministry of Health figures released this week showed the percentage of 5-year-olds who were not fully immunised fell from 15.9 per cent between 2016 and 2017 to 13.5 per cent from 2017 to 2018.

A member of the World Health Organisation Strategic Advisory Group of Experts (SAGE), Turner said parents were entitled to "say no".
"New Zealand can carry them because the rest of us protect them.
"But if there were to be increasing rates of parents that declined then that would be a worry for the whole country," she said.
Social media had seen some parents become "experts" in immunisation, she said.
"Social media absolutely amplifies their fears. It's very sad to see extremely well-meaning parents who feel the need to know more than their own GP."
Social media offers confusing messages to parents when it comes to information about immunisation.

The national health target was 95 per cent of children to be fully immunised by 8 months. Performance measures also aimed for 95 per cent immunisation coverage at age 2 and 5.
Ministry of Health statistics showed 88.1 per cent of 5-year-olds had all their vaccines.
Immunisation records held by district health boards across New Zealand were recorded on the National Immunisation Register. This allowed experts to get an accurate picture of total coverage.
Turner said when she first set up the centre 20 years ago, the rates of immunisation uptake were "a national disgrace".
"There's been a great improvement; childhood immunisation programmes are one of our most effective public health interventions.
"The absence of disease is a difficult product to sell. The better you do, the less visible it is," she said.
The part-time GP said New Zealand practice nurses were the best at helping get the word out.
"If people are enrolled and engaged in general practice, it makes a huge difference. People have to trust in the service."
Nelson Marlborough Public Health Service operations manager Sonia Briggs said parents looking for information online should "stick to evidence-based information from qualified medical professionals only".
"All health professionals engaging with pregnant women, babies or children have been provided with resources to have conversations regarding timely immunisations, and discussions regarding protection around vaccine preventable diseases," she said.
Blenheim mother Tracey Hughes chose to have her daughter, Jade Hughes, 8, fully vaccinated.
"We followed what was recommended. I was fully vaccinated as a child too and we just saw it as a requirement; you just get on with it," she said.
