The House has overwhelmingly approved a bill to suspend the program that allows Syrian and Iraqi refugees into the U.S. until key national security agencies certify they don't pose a security risk.

The vote was 289-137, with nearly 50 Democrats joining Republicans in favor of the bill.

President Barack Obama has promised to veto the legislation, but the high number of Democrats voting against the White House is a clear sign Obama is increasingly isolated in his position on refugees in light of the ISIS terrorist attacks on Paris.

“This should not be about Republicans and Democrats—this should be about keeping America safe,” House Speaker Paul Ryan (R-WI) said last night during an appearance on Fox News’s Hannity with Sean Hannity. Here are excerpts from their conversation on the Syrian refugee crisis and eliminating the threat of ISIS.
On the president’s threat to veto Congress’s refugee legislation:
“I don’t for the life of me understand this. He just said he is going to veto our bill putting a pause on the refugee program. I can’t imagine why one would do that. Our bottom line is very, very clear—and it’s the first responsibility of the federal government—secure the homeland. Keep people safe in America.
“So here’s what we’re doing. We obviously know that ISIS wants to infiltrate the refugee population. That’s very clear. So we need to put a pause on this program and have higher standards placed upon it so that we can verify on a person-by-person basis, each and every single refugee, whether or not they pose any security risk."
On putting politics aside and finding a bipartisan solution:
“This should not be a partisan issue. Democrats agree with us here in Congress, and I think we’re gonna have a pretty big bipartisan vote tomorrow. Because this should not be about Republicans and Democrats. This should be about keeping America safe.”
“This is our national security. It shouldn’t be politicized like the president is politicizing it. And that is why we are asking all of our colleagues to support fixing this, pausing this, and getting this right.”
On raising the standards of the refugee program:
“We’re a compassionate country. The refugee laws are important laws. And we don’t want terrorists to dictate how we run—whether we have a law or not. But we don’t think—in this particular case with respect to ISIS trying to infiltrate the Syrian and Iraqi refugee program—that the standards are anywhere near where they should be.”
On the president’s failure to devise a strategy to defeat ISIS:
“The reason we’re having this conversation about refugees, the reason we’re having this conversation about ISIS, is because we don’t have a plan to defeat ISIS. It’s because the president and his foreign policy—particularly with respect to Iraq and Syria—is so abysmal, so lacking, it didn’t contain ISIS, and we don’t have a strategy to defeat ISIS. So let’s not forget the big picture here, which is we have terrorism, worldwide, knocking on our door, and we do not have a plan to defeat this terrorist threat.”

“It’s clear that the American people are concerned about the Administration’s ability to properly vet thousands of individuals from Syria.

“More than half of our nation’s governors, governors of both parties, have demonstrated their concern.

House OKs bill that could limit Syrian, Iraqi refugees

(CNN)The terrorist attacks in Paris showed the world just how vulnerable a free society can be. They're also a reminder that this administration's attempt to contain the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria has failed. That is why the House of Representatives passed a bill last week that would pause the Syrian refugee program until we can be certain no one coming here is a threat to our country.

Right now, thousands of families continue to pour out of Iraq and Syria to avoid civil war and the horrors of ISIS. Innocent men, women and children of all faiths and backgrounds are seeking asylum in Western countries, including the United States. And America has a long history of helping people in need.

The sad truth, though, is that there are many people who would like to take advantage of our compassion. Terrorists have made it clear that they intend to infiltrate this refugee population to reach the West and carry out other attacks. Most refugees pose absolutely no threat to us, but we simply don't have a sufficient process for figuring out who each person is and verifying his or her background.

So the federal government must balance our compassion and our safety. Here's the situation: Every year, the administration sets the maximum number of refugees the program will accept from each region of the world. And this year, the Obama administration announced we would accept at least 10,000 refugees from Syria.

After a refugee applies, the Department of Homeland Security determines whether he or she is admissible. The State Department says "refugees are subject to the highest level of security checks of any category of traveler to the United States."

That may be true, but here's the problem: We just don't have all that much information to check about Syrian refugees. Many high-ranking administration officials have said as much.

Testifying before Congress last month, FBI Director James Comey put it most starkly: "If someone has not made a ripple in the pond in Syria in a way that would get their identity or their interests reflected in our databases, we can query our databases until the cows come home but nothing will show up because we have no record of that person."

Homeland Security Secretary Jeh Johnson, meanwhile, has said: "It is true that we are not going to know a whole lot about the Syrians that come forth in this process. ... That is definitely a challenge. ... We know that organizations like ISIL might like to exploit this program."

This is a moment, then, when it's better to be safe than sorry. We think the prudent, responsible thing is to take a pause on this particular aspect of this refugee program until we have a more reliable process.

That's why on Thursday the House passed the American SAFE Act in a bipartisan, veto-proof majority vote. It requires a higher level of verification for a refugee from Syria or Iraq to be allowed into the country.

For starters, the FBI director would have to certify that the applicant has received a background check thorough enough to determine whether he or she is a threat. In addition, the DHS secretary -- with unanimous agreement from the FBI director and the director of national intelligence -- must certify to Congress that the applicant is not a threat to the United States.

Because our information on Syrian refugees is very limited, the legislation would effectively put a pause on the program. The FBI will have to put a hold on accepting Syrian refugees until it has revamped the security-check process to meet the new requirements.

The bill imposes no religious test. It simply insists on greater security.

This is a compassionate country. But we can be compassionate and safe at the same time. If the intelligence and law enforcement community cannot certify a person presents no threat, then they should not be allowed in. That is simply common sense.

And it's just a first step. We know that terrorists are also using other avenues, such as the visa waiver program, to travel to Western nations, and these must be examined as well.

More importantly, we can't lose sight of the bigger picture here: The refugee crisis is a consequence of the President's failed policy in the Middle East. It is a symptom of the disease. The ultimate solution is a plan to defeat ISIS, but until we are willing to truly confront this terrorist threat wherever it is, we cannot be truly safe.

The threat is serious, and it will not go away anytime soon. But the Senate can take a few straightforward steps toward a safer America by passing the American SAFE Act and sending it to the president's desk

Macedonia’s interior ministry says 18 police officers were injured in a clash with a group of stranded migrants on the country’s southern border with Greece.

The ministry says two of the officers have been hospitalized in the border town of Gevgelija.

The clashes erupted after a 24-year-old Moroccan migrant suffered severe burns when he touched a high-voltage cable on the Greek side of the border.

The migrants, already angry about the fact that Macedonia has started to erect a fence on the border, started throwing stones at police officers who were cordoning off the official checkpoint. Some police vehicles were also damaged, the ministry says.

Of the 21,748 people who have been given deportation orders by Sweden’s Migration Agency last month – the largest number in history, by the way – 14,140 are registered by police as “departed” or “wanted,” the Swedish website The Local reports.

“We simply don’t know where they are,” said Patrik Engström, the head of the national border police.

It is unknown how many of the missing are still in the country or may have left for elsewhere in Europe. The rest of the illegals are either in refugee centers, in custody, or living in separate accommodations they have arranged for themselves, awaiting deportation.

Border Congressman Henry Cuellar (D-Laredo) says as the U.S. debates the fate of Syrian refugees, the refugees are coming and will continue to arrive on our southern border, and rather than debate, the country needs to start deciding how to handle the coming flood of desperate people from the Middle East, News Radio 1200 WOAI reports.

"They are going to try to short circuit that wait of 18 to 24 months," Cuellar told News Radio 1200 WOAI in an exclusive interview. "They will come in here, make their claim, and if there is nothing to hold them, they will be released."

Two groups of Syrians, mainly families, have already done that, arriving in the U.S. in the Laredo area and then immediately presenting themselves to Border Patrol officers, surrendering, and asking for political asylum.

The standard operating procedure right now is to place them into the family detention centers in Dilley or Karnes City, but many are released on bonds or on ankle monitors after a few months in the facilities. And Cuellar points out that once they are released, the demands of governor like Gov. Abbott that they not be housed in Texas are meaningless. They have the right to settle whenever in the U.S. they want, as long as they present themselves for immigration hearings, which could be set for several years in the future.

Cuellar says that has the effect of scrapping all of the talk of a lengthy wait and 'vetting period' for people seeking refugee status.

(CNSNews.com) – Since the Paris terror attacks on November 13, the State Department has admitted 132 Syrian refugees into the United States, and all 132 are Sunni Muslims.

No Christian, Druze, Shi’ite, Alawite, or member of any other religious minority in Syria has been admitted over that period, according to data from the State Department Refugee Processing Center.

The majority of the 132 Syrian refugees permitted to resettle in the U.S. since November 13 (72) are male, the minority female (60). Of the 132 total, 39 (29.5 percent) have been men between the ages of 14 and 50.

Another 53 (40 percent) are children aged under 14, of whom 30 are males and 23 females.

Macedonian police fired tear gas at hundreds of mostly Pakistani migrants who tried to storm into the Balkan country from Greece on Wednesday demanding passage to wealthier northern Europe.

About 1,500 Pakistanis, Moroccans and Iranians have been stuck in no-man's land between Greece and Macedonia for weeks after non-EU Balkan states began filtering migrants and granting passage only to refugees fleeing Syria, Iraq and Afghanistan.

Protests have swelled among desperate migrants stranded for days in squalid tent camps on the border near the Greek town of Idomeni in temperatures barely above freezing.

Wednesday's violence broke out after about 200 people were denied passage and began walking, for several kilometers (miles), alongside a newly erected border fence, seeking an alternative opening.

Macedonian police fired tear gas to push back the crowd and one officer fired warning shots in the air, a Reuters witness said.

At dusk, about 500 migrants blocked the crossing for refugees in protest shouting: "If we don't cross, no one does!". Police stood guard. Buses full of migrants and refugees who have landed in other cities in recent days kept arriving.
