KASHRUTH ADVISORY
January 29, 2009 OU Public Advisory regarding raisins
Products:
Raisins
Issue:
The OU has long maintained that raisins packed and stored under normal industry conditions do not pose a halachic infestation concern and may be consumed without further checking on the part of the consumer.
Recent public reporting of widespread infestation in packaged raisins has led the OU to reexamine its prior held position vis-Ã -vis raisins. Following careful investigation, extensive testing and consultation with our Halachic authorities, the OU upholds its original position that raisins, when stored under normal conditions (cool, dry and clean environments) do not require checking for the presence of worms or insects.
Many food items, when packed or stored in warm, moist or unclean environments should be avoided until fully checked for the presence of insects, particularly when exhibiting telltale signs of infestation (webbing, insect feeding damage).

The following revised Canadian insect infestation alert is from the MK on April 30, 2010.
We are pleased to advise that further to our previous instruction regarding peppers, currently peppers no longer have to go through the same process of washing and checking, which was previously required. All that has to be done with peppers is to cut off the top, wash it well and carry out a visual check to ensure that there are no worms.
The following Canadian insect infestation alert is from the MK on December 8, 2009.
The MK has recently examined YELLOW & RED PEPPERS and have found that there are many small insects/worms on the outside of these peppers, which look like dirt but with a bit more investigation one can see that these are live insects. We therefore wish to advise the following:
The peppers should not be left on the table or counter prior to checking, but should be placed on a paper or plastic which can be thrown out.
One should wash the whole pepper under a strong stream of water whilst brushing it or rubbing it vigorously.
The bottom and top of the pepper should be cut out.
Cut the pepper in 2 parts and once again wash the pieces under a strong stream of water, whilst, brushing them with a brush or vigorously washing the pepper with your fingers. We recommend to do the same with all other kinds of pepper, even though, no infestation has yet been found. We will continue to monitor the situation and continue checking and will inform the community should the situation change at any time.
