Nothing But Your Thoughts
SimchaMinute by Rabbi Avigdor Miller

Tefilla is what a man thinks in his mind... The multitude has exchanged that for externality, and they consider that they have discharged their obligations by saying so many words and making certain motions and they go home satisfied.

But actually tefilla is nothing but one’s thoughts... As much as you think, that’s how much prayer you’re praying... Like the Rambam says, "Kol tefilla b’lo kavana aino tefilla — Any tefilla without thought is not called tefilla."

— Awake My Glory (#88)

Appreciate Your Hair!
From Ohr Avigdor Shaar Bechina by Rabbi Avigdor Miller

The hair, like everything else in the body, is a multitude of wonderful arrangements. Each hair has its own root, which is surrounded by a receptacle of oil. That little pool of oil keeps the hair supple.

And hair is not just a simple thing. Under the microscope or even a magnifying glass, hair can be seen as a tower, with successive stories, each of which is a little thinner than the one below it. Each story grows out from the one below it, with the start of each stage being clearly visible.

Now the hair of course protects the body and the head. The Chovos Halevavos cites this as an example how Hashem has provided means to protect the delicate organs of the body. It is noteworthy that women have hair on their heads all their lives whereas many men don’t. Hair provides an extra measure of protection for women, who are less able to defend themselves when attacked. Also, younger men, who are more likely to go into battle, have an extra need for protection and so they generally don’t lose their hair until they get older.

But in addition to protection, hair serves other purposes such as promoting marriage and procreation. A young man with a head of healthy hair is like an advertisement that he is capable of having children. A woman’s hair makes her attractive and serves to announce that she is ready to get married. It is amazing to see somebody with long hair and to realize that all of this profusion of material was produced by the skin. A person doesn’t eat hair, but the food he eats turns into hair, a miraculous conversion which is achieved by the cells in the skin of the head.
Hair is not just a simple thing

What Hashem Loves Most
SimchaMinute by Rabbi Avigdor Miller

"Ki chelek Hashem amo — His nation is His portion" (Devarim 32:9). This is something that it so surprising, it’s so difficult even to think about... and it’s stated so clearly that you cannot avoid understanding that lesson. Hakadosh Baruch Hu is saying there’s nothing in the universe that He’s interested in more, that He loves more, than the Am Yisrael.

The Secret to Happiness
From Happy with What He Has (#517) by Rabbi Avigdor Miller

In the midbar (desert), Hakadosh Baruch Hu didn’t give our people any entertainment. There was no "fun" in the midbar in our sense. There was no place to go, even a kosher place like the zoo. No zoos. No Coney Island, no amusement, nothing. Of course no movies, no theaters, no races, there was no television, there was no nothing. Nothing at all.

Now don’t think that in those days people were so backwards that they didn’t know of better things. Among the nations there was a lot of fun among the nations. "Vayakumu l’tzachek," the Egyptian geirim (converts) wanted to have a good time. L’tzachek means to make games, whatever the games were. They wanted to play. They had games among the Greeks way back, hippodromes, horse races, gladiators. They had even fighting with animals, bull fights, animal fights.

They had all kinds of amusements in the days of old, don’t think in the ancient times they didn’t have fun. They had music, they had everything. But in the midbar there was nothing at all. Just nothing.

Not only there was nothing, but nothing to eat in the midbar, just mann for breakfast and supper. Maybe they didn’t even eat lunch, if it was lunch, mann. Every day, Shabbos, yom tov, every day for 40 years. But Hakadosh Baruch Hu was teaching them a great lesson: "Eizeh hu ashir — who is a rich man? Hasameiach b’chelko — a man who learns to be happy with what he has." That’s the secret to happiness.
In the midbar there was nothing at all. Just nothing.

How Do You Love Hashem?

Loving Hashem is at root an internal mitzvah. A person doesn't love Hashem with his feet, he loves Hashem with his mind. Of course, this love inevitably results in actions of the feet, because it motivates him to go to where he can do other mitzvos, but the mitzvah of loving is, in itself, a mitzvah of thinking.

When Are The Best Times To Think About Hashem?

It's one of the three foundations of our existence, to walk secretly with Hashem. When you are sitting home and eating breakfast, you're thinking of Hashem. In the place of where you work, in your office, you're thinking of Hashem. In the Yeshiva, you're thinking of Hashem. When driving in your car (of course you have to drive carefully), you're thinking of Hashem.

Anybody who blesses a Jew...

...Besides all the things that are mentioned in Masechta Kesubos or elsewhere in the entire Shas, besides all these obligations, there’s a great unwritten kesubah that stands in the background, which is included in the obligations of kesubah.

The gemara says, “V’ahavta l’rayacha kamocha — a man is obligated to love his wife like himself,” an obligation that stands behind the whole marriage. A man should not marry a woman he doesn’t like, because he won’t be able to fulfill v’ahavta l’rayacha kamocha. So once he marries her, he better get busy, because...

...the obligation is upon him and he must fulfill the law of the Torah, even though it’s not spelled out in the kesubah.

If a woman says, “I hate my husband,” she is making a cardinally maximal sin. You can’t hate your husband. Even if you do, you shouldn’t say it. You’re mechuyav (obligated) to love your husband. You have to work on it. When you see your husband, a fat old fellow, waddling in the street, you have to say I love that man. If you see him through the window, I love that man. You have to work on it. If you do it, hachitzonius m’oreres es hapenimius (the outside stirs the inside), little by little she gains that feeling.

Hakadosh Baruch Hu says, “If you love Me, then you have to love My people, and the fact that he’s your husband obligates you to concentrate on him more than anybody else.” Hashem loves fat short people. If they’re Jews, shomrei Torah, He loves them intensely, more than anything in the world. So the fact that it’s your husband doesn’t mean he’s deprived of that right. You should love him too. Halevai you should love him a fraction of what Hashem loves him.

You see your wife walking in the street, she gave you a good tongue lashing when she walked out of the house. You’re still angry. You see her walking, say I love that woman. I’m mekayeim v’ahavta l’rayacha kamocha. You have to work on it. Then Hakadosh Baruch Hu will give you reward because, you have to know that this is part of the kesubah, even though it’s not stated. That’s serious.
...
It states in the Torah, “U’mevorechecha baruch,” anybody who gives a blessing to a fellow Jew, to a frum Jew, he’s going to be blessed. It’s a tremendous contract that Hashem made. You’ll bless My people, or bless one of My people, I’m going to bless you. And Hakadosh Baruch Hu keeps His contract.

So therefore, when the husband blesses his wife, she doesn’t have to hear it. He should always be thinking, “I’m blessing my wife — a bracha on her head! My wife should be happy and healthy!” You say it to her, no harm, but you have to think these words and say these words and Hakadosh Baruch Hu says, “That’s your duty and I’m going to give you the benefit of those words.”

If she thinks of her husband in ways of blessing and she says blessings on him, if they keep on blessing each other, of course it’s even better if they hear it from each other, they should so shelo b’panav and b’panav, but it’s important to bless a fellow Jew. And which fellow Jew should you concentrate on most? On your wife, on your husband.

– The Unwritten Kesubah (#E-094)
Hakadosh Baruch Hu says, “If you love Me, then you have to love My people."

You’ll bless My people, I’m going to bless you

What Can You Learn From Egypt's Vengeance?

"And behold I am strengthening the heart of Egypt, and they shall come after them." (Shemos 14:17)

“In the way that a man wishes to go, he is led (by Hashem)” (Makos 10B). The leaders of Egypt, although they had been forced by the Plagues to send Israel free, were still desirous of revenge and perhaps of recapturing Israel. Therefore Hashem led them on to become the means of achieving in the world a greater Awareness of Hashem. The wish of the Egyptians led to their destruction.

The Complex, Coordinated Ear

From Rejoice, O Youth by Rabbi Avigdor Miller

The ear, alone, is a complex of coordinated factors which makes any explanation by “sudden mutation” (evolution) ridiculous. Perched strategically atop the head on both sides, with whorls and hollows to collect the sound waves, they channel the sound to the ear drum.

This membrane, but one tenth of a millimeter in thickness, is composed of three layers. It is especially constructed so that it has no after-vibrations to blur the sound. An ingenious system of bone levers, connected to the ear drum, magnifies the sound. These tiny levers: the malleus, the incus and the stapes are each cunningly and efficiently shaped for their varied functions. They transmit the sound impulses to the lymph in the internal ear, which then arouses nerve impulses in the 20 to 30 thousand hair cells of the hearing nerve.

To maintain equal air pressure on both sides of the ear drum, the inner ear is connected, by the Eustachian tube, with the pharynx to admit air. The rate of probability for accidental development of the most simple of these components is against astronomically-calculated odds. But considering that the components of the ear number in the tens of thousands, and all must be coordinated by a master-plan, only a lunatic can claim this to be the result of a number of accidents.

Serving Hashem with Happiness

From Fortunate Nation by Rabbi Avigdor Miller

"And you shall remember Hashem your G- d, for it is he that gives you strength to acquire wealth in order that he establish his covenant that he swore to your fathers" (Devarim 8:18).

There are two ways to remember Hashem and to become more righteous: (1) because of adversity and suffering, (2) or because of prosperity and happiness.

To remember Hashem because of prosperity is the best way, (1) because Hashem prefers to bestow happiness rather than to send misfortune (“For He desires Kindliness” Micha 7:18); (2) because the emotion of gratitude engenders love of Hashem and eagerness to conform to His will, which is preferable to conformance which results from adversity.

Thus the first opportunity for the continued excellence of Man was offered in the Garden of Delight, which was full of the most luscious and beautiful fruit (Breishis 2:9). When the healthy young man, and the prosperous and powerful man, utilize their happy state to be grateful to Hashem and become therefore more devoted to His service, it is much more deserving of reward than when one improves himself as a result of reprimand and chastisement.

By utilizing your happiness as the cause of continued righteousness, you thereby facilitate and expedite Hashem’s great plan for you. It is true that even repentance caused by suffering would also be rewarded, but the end-result comes much more speedily when we are motivated by joyous and happy Gratitude.
By using your happiness to become more righteousness, you facilitate Hashem’s great plan for you

Climb the Ladder: Identify one form of happiness that perhaps you take for granted. Why do you suppose Hashem blessed you with that happiness? How can you use it better in His service?

The Hand

From Ohr Avigdor Shaar Bechina by Rabbi Avigdor Miller

If you focus your attention on the construction of your hand, you will see it contains a large number of bones that are joined together in an intricate fashion. The bones are able to move without friction because of the lubrication in the joints. Every bone moves in a socket which gives it freedom of motion in some directions, while restricting movement in others.

Some move up and down, some move sideways, and others rotate. Your wrist has a special kind of bone arrangement that allows it to rotate in both directions, whereas your elbow can only move up and down. There’s a purpose to all this. Since you need to be able to put a big load on your elbow, limiting the freedom of movements assures that it will not bend and drop the load.

In contrast, your wrist needs the freedom to rotate to give you the dexterity you need to perform tasks with your hands. And so it is with each organ of your body, as you study it you will see the wonders of its design and the more you study it.
As you study each organ you will see the wonders of its design

Wealth of the Mind

From Ohr Avigdor Shaar Bitachon by Rabbi Avigdor Miller

A person with bitachon (trust in Hashem) is actually a wealthy man. True wealth is when he puts his trust in Hashem. He knows that Hashem is going to do for him what’s right and therefore this man will live in a certain way that we’ll soon see, a certain life that’s different from the way other people live.

That person, therefore, is considered a man who has wealth in his own home, as if he were an alchemist who manufactured gold and silver. We’re talking about people who live normally and are attempting to maintain themselves by some form of livelihood. They work and engage in business, but at the same time they’re working on the middah (quality) of having bitachon in Hashem.

Of the two things that they are doing (working on their livelihood and on their bitachon), which one brings them the most profit? The work on bitachon. A man can have a store or be a laborer who gets wages, but he should know that his real wealth is not what he puts in the bank. It’s what he puts into his mind. This is not so easy when we consider that the baal bitachon is working on his livelihood. He is exerting himself for his sustenance, and at the same time this man is laboring to put into his mind all the principles of trust in Hashem that we’re going to learn later. The author of Chovos Halevavos is telling us that of the two forms of effort, the effort to put bitachon in your mind is the one that’s really going to give you the final success in your life, not only in the World to Come, but in This World too.
The effort to put bitachon in your mind gives you the greatest success in your life

his real wealth is not what he puts in the bank. It’s what he puts into his mind

How Often Should You Bother Hashem with Your Problems?

Try to call out (to Hashem) at every opportunity. Let's say you're going somewhere; if you say a short prayer you shouldn't miss the bus, Hashem will love you for that. If you say, "I won't bother Him for such a small thing; I'll try to catch the busy myself, without Him," you're off the tracks already. In everything you try to remember to call out to Hashem; He doesn't mind being bothered.

What Should Take Up Most Of Your Mind?

The creator should take up most of your mind. But if your mind is busy always with your car, whenever you have a spare moment you have to rush out, wash your car, polish your car. Sunday mornings you pass through certain neighborhoods, everyone is busy hosing their cars. It takes up time. Many are busy climbing under their cars, repairing them. People are busy with going places, they have relatives they must visit. They are busy going to affairs, people (with) [will] dance at all weddings, how can they turn down an invitation to a wedding. And so they go to Toronto, and they go to Montreal, and they go to Baltimore. They wouldn't miss out a wedding. Now when people run around to all affairs and thinking of all kinds of undertakings in life, they have very little space left in their brains about the big pursuits that life is created for.

How Do Challenges Improve You?

"AND JACOB WENT FORTH FROM BEER SHEVA, AND HE WENT TO HARAN." (Breishis 28:10)

It was comparatively easy to be righteous in the tent of his parents; but now the theoretical teachings would be put to the test of practicality. By dint of bitter ordeals under the power of Laban, Jacob would climb the ladder of Perfection until he was worthy to be the father of the nation of Israel. The Perfection of learning Hashem's ways is indeed precious, but the Perfection of practicing these ways under the great difficulty is even more precious.

How Important is Recognizing Hashem's Kindness?

To recognize His kindliness in addition to His wisdom and power, is the supreme function of our lives... So important is this pursuit that it is offered as the reason for requesting the Redemption: "Gather us together and rescue us from the nations, to give thanks (or: praise) to Your holy name and to take pride in Your praise" (Tehillim 106:47, I Chronicles 16:35).

What Is The Reward of Seeking Hashem?

"And after they have thus destroyed my skin, from my flesh I shall see G-d" (Job 19:26)

From one's own flesh he can see the testimonies of the Creator's handiwork. But this verse means also: When I go forth "from my flesh" into the Afterlife, "I shall see G-d.:

The second meaning is the reward and the result of the first meaning. After a lifetime spent in seeing G-d in our flesh, as well as in the world around us, He rewards us by the endless ecstasy of seeing Him in the Afterlife.
