What's your biggest challenge?

When a yeshiva man begins his career, he discovers that he has one mighty opponent. It’s laziness, that’s the great enemy. A person’s life is given for a purpose of achieving. If he doesn’t understand this definition of life, then the whole question is misunderstood. The purpose of life is not primarily to avoid doing sins, it is to accomplish something.

What is the great danger to your mind?

If a person gets splashed by mud... it’s a great embarrassment... but the uncleanliness of the mind of the person is a million times worse... You can take your garment to the cleaners... but the mind is something you cannot wash so easily...

A person’s character is corroded by its wrong acts. A sin spoils it intrinsically, and it becomes inwardly tamai (impure). He has befouled it in such a way that it doesn’t wash off.

עִבְדוּ אֶת ה' בְּשִׂמְחָה בֹּאוּ לְפָנָיו בִּרְנָנָה (תהלים ק' ב')
What does it mean to serve Hashem with happiness?

“Ivdu es Hashem b’simcha — serve Hashem with Happiness” (Tehilim 100:2)

[People make] a mistake in the simple meaning. Of course you have to serve "with simcha." But what does it mean "with simcha"?

You have to serve with the simcha, with the fact that you’re happy. That’s the way to serve Hashem. When you have everything, why [don’t] you serve Hashem with that happiness and say to Him “Thank You Hashem!”

Why is Hashem "our" G-d?

"He is Hashem our G-d; His judgments are in all of the world" (Dvarim 10:14).

Whatever He does in the world (and indeed all that transpires in the Universe is done solely by Him), He does as "Hashem our G-d".

This verse is the key to understanding of all History. This is the second most important principle of the Holy Scriptures, following the first principle: "In the beginning, G-d created..."

What is true fear of Heaven?

True fear of Heaven, is to feel that Hashem is here; and then come closer and feel a love toward Him. We have to realize that this yearning will not be quieted in this world; all we can do is follow the urge.

All our lives, we’re going to continue the quest to come closer and closer, and we’ll achieve more and more as a result.

Who's happy

“If you do this [labor in Torah, even in poverty], how fortunate you are, and how good it is for you.” (Tehilim 128:2)

The mishnah explains: “How fortunate you are in this world.” (Brachos 8a)

The Orthodox Jew who lives according to the ancient ways of the Jewish people is an optimistic and happy person. (This expression appears again and again in Tanach: “How happy is the nation… How happy is Yisrael…”)

How Do You Come To Love Hashem?

As you sink your teeth in a piece of cold watermelon -- it's red and sweet and juicy and cold, ah, the pleasure! Think, "I love You Hashem for that." Now isn't that corny? It's insincere. Even when you are making a bracha you don't believe in Hashem, it's just the words in a siddur. But say it anyhow! That's how you'll start out. If you don't start out you'll never get there.... Try a little bit to love Hashem for the watermelon.

If only a single leaf was found in the world, it would constitute irrefutable proof of an infinite intelligence., by reason of its amazing rib-structure, conduits which conduct the fluid bearing the various materials in thousands of roads and by-ways, and its numerous tiny but marvelously efficient chemical laboratories. Here is more engineering than a dozen George Washington bridges, and more chemistry apparatus that in all the Du Pont plants put together.

How Do You Compare To Earlier Generations?

When the prophet (Isaiah) said, "Your hands are full of blood," he was referring not to bloodshed but to negligence in caring for the needy.... The prophet denounced them for not doing more (although their deeds far excelled ours), and in the parlance of prophecy this was called "sin," "deeds of Sodom," and "hands full of blood." If Isaiah were to characterize the best of us today, he would fall short of epithets.

Ask Rabbi Miller: Which Middah to Work on During Pesach
From, How Goodly Are Your Tents, Oh Jacob (#E-102) by Rabbi Avigdor Miller

Q: What’s the ideal middah (character trait) to work on Pesach time?

A: On Pesach time the first thing is to think, "Baavur zeh asah Hashem li b’tzaisi m’Mitzrayim." Think what Hashem did for you. — what He did for you, that He made you into a person that has a future.

You’re living in this world for a future. He gave you a Torah and He taught you how to produce maasim tovim, how to live correctly, and the end will be in order to give you the happiness forever and ever in Olam Haba (the World to Come).

So we have to thank Hashem He took us out of Mitzrayim. When He took us out of Mitzrayim we were finished with the gentile influence. He took us into the midbar (desert) where we were all alone. We had no connection with the goyim. And he gave us a Torah.

Therefore the coming out of Mitzrayim was a very great happiness. But don’t think it’s a national happiness on a national level. "Baavur zeh asah Hashem li," everybody should think he is the one who went out of Mitzrayim, because we’re getting the benefits that we went out of Mitzrayim. And therefore there’s no end of gratitude because Yetzias Mitzrayim we become obligated in hakaras tov (gratitude) to Hakadosh Baruch Hu forever and ever.

All our lives — "L’maan tizkor es yom tzeischa m’eretz Mitzrayim kol yimei chayecha — You should never forget that what He did for you..." What he did for you, personally. That’s how you have to remember Yetzias Mitzrayim.
You should never forget that what He did for you

What's the secret reason for exile?

It may be that the fundamental purpose of the exile was to provide a test, in addition to other purposes, such as bringing out qualities of exceptional righteousness despite the hostile environment, or in order to gain righteous proselytes (Pesachim 87B), or in order that the entire nation should never be under the power of any single ruler...

These, and more like them, are the secret reasons for our exile among the nations.

Every Jew has to know that he’s a witness to the giving of the Torah; to the revelation at Har Sinai; to the ideals that Hashem wants a holy nation to accept.

The job of every Jew is to make known in the world what he knows about Hashem — the principles and ideals of the Torah he received. We’re obligated in the Torah, but its principles must spread gradually throughout mankind.

What is the significance of all the details of the measurements of the Mishkan, and other details in other subjects of the Torah?

You have to realize there are a number of cases when these measurements are of utmost importance to us even today. First of all, there is a question of corroboration. If we want to know the reliability of a document, so we try to find contradictions in the document.

Now, when somebody wants to write a false document, he puts in as few details as possible, so it should be more difficult to catch him in a self-contradiction. Cunning liars always speak as little as possible. If you have to lie on the witness stand, so try to say as little as possible; it's good advice, it may happen someday. Or if you are being cross-examined, the less information you volunteer the better off you are, because when you say more things it's easier to trip you up.

L'havdil elef havdolos in the new testament, when it tells about a certain miracle, details are omitted. It's a general thing, oso ha'ish stood on a mountain and he was transfigured, and he looked like something that came from above, and the people fell down and worshiped him, and that's the whole story. But let's have some more details, after all it was such a big event the way they describe it, there must've been a lot of people of the Jews who didn't approve, what did they say?

It's a queer thing, in all these stories the only witnesses were the believers. You mean to say that the majority of the Jews in Eretz Yisroel believed that? The majority didn't believe! All of the sages disbelieved.

It's an interesting thing, in all the stories, not one sage was ever present. Why didn't they have Rabbon Gamliel present, or any of the old sages, so let them disagree... No. In all the stories, the stories are made as simple as possible, it shouldn't be complicated, there shouldn't be any questions asked.

The Torah purposely tells details upon details, and that's one of the ways of checking, by crosschecking. It's surprising how much information can be gained by checking one place with another. For instance, if you want to know how precise was the number of 600,000 Jews that left Egypt. 600,000 males, now that's a big number, and apikorsim like Ben Gurion and others deny it. But if you crosscheck you see, that the donation of a machtzis ha'shekel that they gave for the Mishkan, could only come to such big sums from 600,000 people. It's been calculated, even gentiles calculated this, and it was only possible from a huge multitude.

So when you crosscheck, you're able to verify the credibility of these reports. The measurements are not only given here, they are mentioned more than once, they are related once in the command to do it, they're related later when he relates how it was done, it was fulfilled, and again and again a number of times.

Therefore this gives us an excellent opportunity for crosschecking, and that's just one of the reasons for writing these things in the Torah. When the Torah tells us the genealogical tables of the nations, and the Torah tells us who begot whom, and how the nations fanned out from one individual to a number of families, it gives credibility to the Torah, because you see here a logical sequence how the families spread, how all the Semitic families came from Shem, and all the Hamitic families came from Cham, and you understand the relationship between the families. Therefore it gives plausibility because in the days of old when people were closest to the sources, it was easier for them to check on these things.

The Rav has spoken forcefully about the issur of smoking. If you are right, why don't we find the Gedolim issuing an issur for Yeshiva bochurim to smoke?

The answer is that we don't need the Gedolim for this. It's in the Torah itself - VeNishmartem Meod LeNafshoseichem - and it's an application of common sense. The Gedolim are not scientists. They cannot prove that smoking is harmful. And they don't have to. If on the package of the cigarettes itself it says that the Surgeon General is warning you that cigarette smoking is dangerous for your health, and it even enumerates sicknesses that come from smoking then you're michuyav to understand that on your own. It's common sense. The Gedolim will teach you about the Torah responsibilty, the chiyuv, to take care of your health. But we sometimes know more about the details because we can read the cigarette package. Maybe some Gedolim can't even read English. We can read, and that's what it says on the cigarette package, so we have to speak up and say that smoking is a chet. Anybody that smokes today should know that there is no longer the heter of Shomer pesaim Hashem, that Hashem watches over the ones who are unaware. He's not a pesi - he's a rasha. You're a choiteh gomur if you smoke today.

Does the Rav approve of celebrating Pesach in a hotel?

I do not. I definitely disapprove of going to a hotel on Pesach. Now some hotels are definitely not kosher l'Pesach despite the fact that they say so, but I'm not talking about that. Some hotels are kosher l'Pesach but they provide other kinds of activities that are not in consonant with the Pesach spirit; I'm certainly not talking about that either. I'm talking about a hotel where there are no Broadway shows, there's not even a television there, there's nothing there except seforim in the bais hamedresh, and everything is one hundred percent kosher, better than in your own home, and still I say Pesach is a home celebration.

The Seder is kodesh kodoshim in your own sanctuary, your own Bais Hamikdash. It's an opportunity given by Hakadsoh Baruch Hu. Ish seh l'bais avos, seh la'boyis, Pesach is for a family, that's what it is. When the father gets together with his children in the hallowed atmosphere of the Seder and he hands over - not an official singer or an official Rabbi - the father represents the whole background of Jewish tradition. My own father is handing this over to me like his father handed it over to him, and the chain goes back link by link to Har Sinai, link by link to Yetzias Mitzrayim. That's what Pesach should be.

I definitely disapprove of going away for Pesach, no two ways about it.

Are You Looking For Good Times?

It's important to realize that all the pleasures of this life are actually not pleasures in themselves. All the fun of this world is actually functional. People go out to eat, with music and entertainment. But as soon as they are satiated, it stops being fun. People who go out to eat are trying to make an end out of the means. They try to persuade themselves that they're having a good time.

What should be the attitude of an Orthodox Jew regarding glatt kosher Chinese restaurants?

I think it's superfluous to even speak about this. We're definitely happy that they are glatt kosher. And if they would close down entirely it would be even better.

-- TAPE # 38 (November 1974)
* * *

Does Hakodosh Boruch Hu really mind if we enjoy ourselves once in a while by eating out in a restaurant?

First of all, not only does Hashem not mind if you enjoy yourself once in a while, but He doesn't mind if you enjoy yourself all the time. And not only does He not mind, but He wants you to enjoy yourself all the time. And you must get that into your head. If you would frequent these lectures regularly you would know that Hakodosh Boruch Hu wants us to be happy all the time, and whatever we do, we should do with happiness.

But the question really becomes - what is happiness? Now, if you eat out, for the moment it might seem like fun, but when you come home at night, and at 3 o'clock in the morning you have to start running because you don't know what they served you in the restaurant - look, it's certainly not as wholesome as what you could eat at home. I told you once - a man once told me that he was in a restaurant and he peeked through the swinging doors into the kitchen. He saw a waiter spit onto a plate and wipe it clean with his apron - a true story!

There are better ways of enjoying life than eating out. What's so great about eating out?! It costs less to eat at home. What it is really, is only imagination. Because people have put a premium on eating out so they think it's fun. However, we're not going to go into details now about this foolishness.

But there is no question that Hashem is happy when His children are happy - of course, if it's all done in a good way, in a virtuous and kosher way.

If I struggle with anger issues and ga'avah, what could I do to start to get rid of these traits?

And the only answer is to learn the textbooks, li'havdil, the mussar seforim that teach about these things. Learn Mesillas Yesharim again and again. If you learn the right seforim, you will get the right ideas into your head.

Let me explain: You have to know that when a person is a ba'al ka'as, it's because he doesn't know that anger is an ugly thing. It may be wrong, but it's not ugly. Suppose a person knows that it's wrong - that it's disgusting - to walk in the street without any pants on. He wouldn't do it. He's ashamed. He can't do it. It's too embarrassing. If you learn the right seforim, you'll realize that ka'as is like losing your pants. "Oh," you'll say, "Well that's something else." It's shameful. It's disgusting. You will learn that ka'as is a shame for you. Once you get that into your head, by means of the seforim, now you'll be ready to conquer your ka'as.

You have to understand how ugly ga'avah is. Ga'avah is ridiculous. It's stupid. When a person learns this from seforim, when he really understands this, then he'll be able to overcome it.

So the first thing is to learn Mesillas Yesharim again and again. Get into your head the true ideals, the true attitudes and then you'll be able to overcome all those things that find a place in your mind only because you don't realize how wrong they are.

How does one fight the Yetzer Ha'rah?

That's a good question, and the answer is barasi Yetzer Ha'rah u’barasi lo Torah tavlin - "I created the Yetzer Ha'rah," says Hashem, "And I created the Torah as its remedy" (Kiddushin 30b). Learning! Learning means that you're filling your mind with Torah thoughts, Torah attitudes. You have to learn Torah because the Torah teaches you how to deal with the Yetzer Ha'rah.

Now, there are two ways that this works. One way is bi'derech segulah. Merely learning - learning alone - is vitamins against the Yetzer Ha'rah. Hakodosh Boruch Hu sees that you're learning and He says, "I'm going to protect you from the Yetzer Ha'rah." Without any other logical explanation - it's called segulah.

And the second way is sechel. Because the Torah is full of ideas and ideals that give you the right kinds of thoughts. When a person has no good thoughts in his mind - when his mind is vacant - a vacuum will not remain a vacuum forever and wrong ideas and bad thoughts will come into his head from the outside world. But if you fill your mind with good ideas - with Torah ideas - and you're thinking all the time about these right ideas - in the street, at home - then you won't have time for or interest in the Yetzer Ha'rah. You walk in the street and think about Ma'amad Har Sinai. You sit at the bus stop waiting and you're thinking about Yetzias Mitzraim. It takes work to learn how to do that, but there is no option. You must fill your mind with good ideas. And then when the Yetzer Ha'rah comes knocking on your door, you'll tell him, "No, I'm sorry. This place is already occupied."

How should I deal with people who are nasty or unpleasant? Should I be nice to them?

And the answer to that is a resounding yes. Look, if it is a person with whom there is no use talking because the more you talk, the more insolent he becomes, then make it as short as you possibly can. But it pays to be friendly with everybody - even resha'im - because it takes the edge off their wickedness.

Of course, if it's a real rasha, a danger, then if it's possible to get rid of him, I mean legally of course then do it. But if it's not possible, then you have to deal with him in a friendly way because that will take the point off of his claws. Because if you start up with him then you're sharpening his claws and the next Jew will get it even more.

And if it's an unfriendly Jew then that's the way to disarm him as well. In general, that's the way to disarm people. Be polite and diplomatic and by doing so you will win out in every respect. You will never lose out by using your sechel; and sechel means being friendly.

Why Must You Guard Your Health?

When there's a possibility of peril and you aren't careful, you're not guarding your health or your safety, you have to know it's a sin. And don't think it's a small sin. It's all included in the sin of shedding blood. You'll say, "Well it's my own blood." No, it's not your own. It all belongs to Hashem. Nothing is yours. If you shed your own blood, Hashem will make you pay for it. Oh yes.

What Are We Learn From Food?

For food to grow out of the earth, thousands upon thousands of miracles take place. it's important to know that. Hashem makes food in such a miraculously complicated ways, convolutions, and complications, all with His plan, with His system, and all done to prove it's yad Hashem. And it's considered greater than the nissim of Kriyas Yam Suf.
