What do you say to someone who has trouble getting to sleep on time?

Briefly; the seforim say that a man has to be a zariz. Zariz means he has to have alacrity (cheerful readiness) to serve Hashem. Hevei gibor ko’ari. – "Be strong as a lion, Laasos retzon avinu sheBashamayim – to do the will of your father in heaven" (Avos 5:23). Sometimes it takes strength of a lion to do the will of Hashem. And the seforim say that among the things included in being strong like a lion is to force yourself to go to sleep on time. If you just dawdle around after bed time, so you'll get up in the morning without energy, and you'll waste the next day. Your davening will be without much energy and surely your learning. And so, you must force yourself to hit the hay on time. You have to be a zariz, and strong like a lion to get to sleep on time. That's the way to prepare for a next day of achievement.

What lesson should be learned from the killing of a police officer this past week?

Now we have to repeat an old lesson. You have to know there's a wind of liberalism blowing, and it's all lies. They'll tell you statistics that are lies, their statements are all lies. People will NEVER refrain from crime unless they are afraid of punishment! And murder has to have the death penalty; otherwise, you'll never stop it. These liars say there's no proof that the death penalty is a deterrent.

You know that the Italian construction worker has more intelligence than the editors of the New York Times, no question about it, because these are artificial people, they don't think straight! It would be the very best thing if the editor of the New York Times once took a walk in Central Park, and he'd get a drubbing from some bums, or they would flash a knife at him, then he'd stop being a liberal. Because in the ivory towers, the affectation, the showing off, it's all showing off! They are against taking human life they say, oh terrible, they're horrified.

So what do they do? They are for abortion, and killing of millions of babies every year, that's alright! But taking human life, whose human life? A murderer? Oh no! We don't repay murder with murder! Then society themselves become the murderers, that's the very worst example! To murder a man who killed a policeman? That's a murderer, which means we are the murderers. So as long as we listen to these fools - these are fools, they have no intelligence at all, but they are doing it for a purpose, an affectation of showing off to make an impression on the world that they are higher people!

The truth is that they're the lowest of the low, because they're the ones who advocate every form of perversion, every form of wickedness there is. So how long, how long fellow Jews will you be blind and you'll vote for such people as Gov. Carey? You don't even think twice. Such a rasha merusha, Carey is the one whose hands shed the blood of all these innocent victims when he vetoes the bill for the death penalty, Carey is the arch-murderer.

And all those people, I won't say the names of the Orthodox who make deals with Carey, they will get certain funds from the state, therefore they will get the Jewish vote; they're all shedding blood, innocent blood, and Jewish blood. There's only one way to deal with crime, and that is there should be strict, stern punishments. For stealing there has to be stern punishment, for every kind of crime. The world will never be safe when the liberals are in charge of the attitudes of the public. We have to free ourselves from these attitudes, that's what we have to learn.

What do we learn from the murder of a policeman? We learn that you must go back to what was years ago, when they didn't murder policemen, they were afraid to murder a policeman, because they knew it meant sure death. If you murdered somebody else, also it was a pretty good chance you would also end up in the electric chair, but for a policeman he knew for certain that that was his sure destination.

But today? So that is what was caused. We are the ones who are to blame, and our own lives chas veshalom are in danger because we are stupid enough to be swayed by these whims that sway the reshaim.

When Does the Fun Begin?

It’s a great pleasure to be alive. We’re so accustomed to it that we don’t appreciate it until we’re in danger chas v'eshalom (Heaven forbid) of losing it. In the last moments of a man’s life he realizes in a flash how sweet it is to be alive. But that’s not the definition of life, because there’s much more happiness when life comes to an end. That’s what the Torah reveals to us. Happiness begins when a man passes out of this life.

Why Did Hashem Give You So Many Mitzvos?

Other nations have disappeared, others will disappear; but the am (nation) of Hashem will remain forever, like it states openly again and again in the words of the prophets: "Just as the mountains are eternal," or even more, "The mountains will depart, but My love of you will never come to an end," says Hashem. Our gratitude to Hashem is much greater than that of non-Jews, and that’s why we do mitzvos.

What's your role in the world?

The nations, exemplified by Esav, choose this world; like the creatures that follow their instincts, they live solely to gratify the body. Jacob was entirely unlike the beasts: he was smooth and without hair, to emphasize Israel’s role as the true fulfillment of the human model that lives to serve not his passions but to serve Hashem.

How Did Pharaoh Prepare Yisroel for the Torah?

What greater gift could Hashem give anybody in this world that’s bigger than the Torah? But in order that they should accept the Torah they needed another gift as a prelude, and that was the gift of Tzaros (suffering). And so Pharaoh was even more influential than Moshe Rabbeinu in getting them to accept the Torah.

What three characteristics distinguish the Jewish people?

“Three signs are in this people; they are merciful, they are modest and they practice kindliness” (Yevamos 79A). The genuine Jew has mercy, is ashamed to do misdeeds and to be arrogant, and he is eager to do acts of kindness. Sometimes one of these qualities may become submerged or atrophied; but when a Jew possesses all three, he thereby demonstrates that he is a descendant of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob.

Is there a benefit to deep introspection?

If you get the knack of using your mind as a bucket, and you lower the bucket into the depths of your soul you’ll discover that there’s endless wisdom there. The longer the rope, the more deeply you can lower that bucket into your mind and draw forth precious wisdom that will flow without end.

When there’s a possibility of peril and you aren't careful, you’re not guarding your health or your safety, you have to know it’s a sin. And don’t think it’s a small sin. What Makes You Great?

“Al kein yomru hamoshlim bo’u cheshbon.” Moshlim means those who control themselves, those who rule over themselves. These are men of virtue. A great man is one who has learned to be in control, he doesn’t do anything unless he consults his wisdom, his reason. They are the moshlim and they say “bo’u cheshbon” come to cheshbon. Q:
The Rav said tonight that Dovid Hamelech reached greatness because of his constant singing of praises to Hashem. But the Rav has said in the past that music lessons for children are a waste of time. Can that be explained more clearly?

A:
Yes, I'll explain. Shiru lo, zamru lo (Tehillim 105:2) What does that mean? Shiru lo means to say poetry to Hashem. Not singing, but poetry. To talk with enthusiasm - to speak in an enthusiastic manner. That's poetry. And then it says zamru lo, sing with music to Hashem. Not only to say poetry to Hashem but to sing with music as well. So we see that it's a mitzvah to show our happiness and gratitude to Hashem with music as well. It's a mitzvah.

Now, if we teach our children to be grateful to Hakodosh Boruch Hu, that's the first step. Parents have to teach their children to appreciate all the things that we mentioned here tonight (Tape E-213 "The First Step on the Path to Greatness"). And it's a very big task. But to teach your son how to sing with music before that first step is like telling a person to blow into a horn. But he doesn't know what to blow. He has no notes. And so his blowing the horn is nothing. And therefore, the first thing is to train your children in the art of thanking Hashem. Most people play music and they don't thank Hashem. They don't think about Hashem at all. And that's why it's a waste of time.

When you pass a music store you should know that it's a place for meshuga'im. Only wild people frequent such a place. No decent people go into a music store today. Because all it is, is a wildness of the nerves. Music excites the nerves for nothing.

But if you have a tzadik - an eved Hashem who learned how to talk about Hashem and how to thank Hashem, and now he wants to express himself with song, that's different. That's the shiru lo zamru lo that Dovid Hamelech was speaking about.

I once went into a certain shteibel and a Rebbe was sitting there singing. I can't forget it. He was singing anah anah av'dah di'kudshah brichhu. It went into my blood and I'll never forget it. That's already something else. A man who has yiras shamayim and he's singing and he's putting all of his yiras shamayim into the song. That's something else entirely! I was listening to him and it had a tremendous influence on me.

But some people want to play music and sing, but their minds are empty. That's a one hundred percent waste of time. Just to arouse your nerves by the excitement of music without having the noble thoughts to accompany the music is nothing.

And that's why it's so important to teach out children to sing to Hakodosh Boruch Hu about everything in our lives that we mentioned tonight. Shiru lo. Lo! To Him! That's the first step. And after they accomplish that, if they are already perfect in the shiru lo - in the avodah of speaking with enthusiasm about Hashem - then you can move onto zamru lo, and teach your child music so that he'll be able to sing and thank Hashem with music.

Q:
Is one obligated to believe that the Tannaim and Amoraim knew modern science and mathematics?

A:
You're not obligaged to believe such a thing. Let's say you had a broken air conditioner, and so you called in Eliyahu Hanavi to fix it, and he didn't know how to fix it. Would that be a p'gam, a deficiency, in the greatness of the navi?! That's ridiculous!

So why should you expect that they should know all of the technology of today?! What they knew, is more important than all the wisdom of today. They knew the ikarei ha'olam, the fundamentals of truth of this world. They understood the world better than any scientist understands it today, with all of his scientific knowledge. And that's because the scientists understand just the pratim, only the details; but the general rules, the k'lalim of the world and of life, they don't understand at all. Not at all! They're all confused, and they learn wrong p'shat in all the k'lalim. What they are, are highly educated fools. The kadmonim, the early sages, on the other hand, knew clearly and perfectly the whole mihaleich, the structure and path, of history, as well as the ways of the world - even the ways of nature in general. But pratim, details, that's not important. And therefore, the fact that the technologists of today can repair air-conditioners, or scientists know details of biology or any other science, does not make them superior in the least. Not at all!

Is it true what the Rav implied earlier that mitzvos of bein adam la'chaveiro, between man and his fellow man, are more important than mitzvos bein adam la'makom, between a man and Hashem?

Are mitzvos between a man and and his fellow more important than mitzvos between man and Hashem? The answer is that bein adam la'chaveiro is bein adam la'makom. When you deal with your fellow Jew, that's done in the service of Hashem. That's why we said tonight that teshuva is "shuva ad Hashem Elokecha." Ad Hashem is the foundation of teshuva. Everything that we said here tonight about improving our
avodah of bein adam la'chaveiro is not because of "chaveiro" - it's because of Hashem! It's all Hashem! There's no such thing as a dichotomy (separation) between the two types of mitzvos of bein adam la'makom and bein adam la'chaveiro. To love your fellow is exactly the same as loving Hashem. But we have to do it with the thought that this Jew is "banim atem la'Hashem Elokeichem" - a child of Hashem. That's how you should love him - because he's a son of Hashem, a child of Hashem. So that way, if you love him then you're loving Hashem.

And therefore, there should be no question about there being any difference between the two types of mitzvos. If a person will, let's say, be kindhearted to Jews but he doesn't care for Hashem then its not called kindhearted at all. It's nothing. It's worthless. It's a waste of effort. It's a waste of effort loving your fellow Jew if you don't believe in Hashem.

And therefore, all of our efforts that we will make in the subjects we discussed tonight - understanding tzelem Elokim, appreciating the greatness of Klal Yisroel, loving your fellow Jews - these are all based on the concept of avodas Hashem. It has to be for Hashem.

What could a person think about during a regular work day if he wants to become great??

Ohhhh! This is so important! Whenever you have a chance – and this applies equally to a woman – you should think, “I love You, Hakodosh Boruch Hu. I thank You, Hashem, that I don’t have the flu. I thank You, Hashem, that I don’t have this disease. I thank You that I don’t have that disease. I thank You, Hashem, that I have the money to pay rent. I thank You, Hashem, that I’m able to see. Thank You for giving me good eyes. I thank You that I’m living in a free country. I thank You that I have a pair of shoes. I thank You, Hashem, that I’m a Jew.”

There are so many things to think about. I don’t even know what’s the question. There’s no end to the things that you can think about. All day long! So much opportunity to become great by thinking about Hashem and thanking Him. Only that you have to think about your business too. The question is, when do you have time to think about your business, there’s so much to think about.

Should a person ever give in to his desires?

Absolutely! Absolutely you should give in to your desires. You have a desire to eat, give in. When you feel hungry, when you feel a desire to eat, that’s a message min hashamayim, and it’s a mitzvah to eat. It’s time to go to sleep? Give in to that desire. Don’t hang around and talk. Give in to your desire and go to sleep early; certainly. Go to the bathroom. Don’t hold yourself in! It’s very unhealthy, and it causes constipation. Give in to your desire and go to the bathroom; certainly. All of the good desires that Hashem made, give in to them.

But let’s say your desire is only to waste time, then don’t give in to that desire. Why give in to desires that lead you nowhere? A desire to eat nosherai? For what purpose?! Develop a desire to learn. What a pleasure it is! A person can develop a cheishak to learn, and he loves learning; he desires learning. Get a desire to learn, a desire to look in a sefer. There’s so much happiness in that desire. You have to acquire the hobby of learning. I use the word hobby – chas v’shalom, it’s a not a hobby, L’havdil! It’s a desire that you should develop. Get into the cheishak of learning, of always looking into seforim. That’s a desire to give in to. And it’s a tremendous achievement.

Why don't teeth grow with a child as bones and other organs grow?

First of all, a child cannot be born with teeth otherwise he would bite his mother. A child has to have milk, a certain special nourishment, and human milk has no counterpart in the world; therefore he couldn't have teeth in the beginning.

Now as he grows, the Chovas Halvavos makes a statement always quoted here, why do teeth hurt when a child begins teething? In order to teach a child the nature of Olam Hazeh; this world is not going to be all fun, and he has to get accustomed to the idea that sometimes you have to bear it, you have to tolerate suffering. That's the introduction to Olam Hazeh. Now once a person learns to tolerate suffering, then he's ready to take it.

As time goes on and if he utilizes the opportunities to protect his teeth properly, if people teach their children to brush their teeth and not go to sleep with a candy clinging between their teeth, letting it rot during the night, then they are going to have good teeth when they grow up, and be good looking too. A girl with nice teeth can more easily get married too, no? Therefore it's important for parents to teach their children to brush their teeth, they'll be happy and healthier, but from neglecting your teeth anything can happen; a person neglects his health anything can happen.

Therefore the teeth are a great blessing, and when the teeth start falling out in old age, it's a sign to get ready for the great transition from this world to the next world.

That's why your hair starts turning white instead of remaining black, to let you know you have to start preparing.

How can you change a long-standing habit of too much talking?

There are a lot of things to suggest. Make a sign and hang it over your telephone; hang it in every room of your house if necessary. You make a nice sign, go to a sign store and have them make ten or six copies or as many rooms as you have, and the sign should say: Shut your mouth! The best advice for your health.

Of course you may still need vitamins in addition to that, you still have to eat and sleep, but believe me that it's the healthiest thing that you can do for yourself. Look at that sign, and even though you won't obey it all the time, if you'll obey it part of the time it'll be a great benefit, a life saver.

Many people, when they have some worry they utter it; by uttering your worry you are making it real, by talking more about it, it becomes bigger, and the more you talk about it, the more the thing becomes aggravated. Most worries if you wouldn't speak about them, would pass by and not be noticed at all. That's why wise people don't utter, they don't voice their worries. I'll give you an example. You come home, and since you're a fool, and generally argue with everyone, so you tell your wife, "I had an argument with the boss today."

So she says, "You are fighting with everybody, always. It's just like you!"

So he says, "What do you mean I'm fighting with everybody? It wasn't my fault!"

"It was", she says. "And what about yesterday what you said to me?" And so on until it becomes a conflagration. And what started out as a small thing, now becomes as a focal point of irritation in his stomach membrane; that's the beginning of a future ulcer. Now, these worries if they wouldn't be mentioned - it says al tarbeh sicha im ha'isha, don't speak much to a wife. What does it mean don't speak much to your wife? One of the meforshim say, don't tell your wife of your defeats.

If you came here tonight to hear this, then you didn't waste your time; only tell your wife of your victories. If the boss praised you, you can say it to your wife. If anybody said something good about you, you can repeat it to your wife, but if anything unfavorable happened, don't tell her! Because she's going to use it as a handle against you, either now or five years later. Never tell your wife of any failures.

Also, don't tell her of troubles, don't even tell her that you had a blowout in a tire, because she's going to blow it up herself. She's going to talk about it. "I told you you shouldn't park there, you don't listen to me, you're stubborn, if you would take the car into the garage it wouldn't have happened", so on and so forth. Don't tell your wife of any troubles and you'll be surprised how many troubles will go away and nothing will come of them. Besides your wife is going to become troubled herself, and she'll make it in her mind magnified a hundred times more than it is.

So, if you don't talk you are doing a great favor to yourself and to others.
