What Thoughts Keep You Protected?

Two conditions must be fulfilled in order to Approach G-d:

(1) To keep away from the nations and from the Jews who imitate them, and

(2) To put ourselves to the task of gaining the Torah-mind, chiefly from the Torah study. Israel's security is conditional on its independence of non-Torah attitudes.

What Does a Mitzvah Do For You?

If you do a mitzvah, you create a spiritual being. A mitzvah is not an act that once it's done it disappears and it no longer exists.... Even physical acts have a certain permanence. But a mitzvah is an advocate that speaks for you, it's a malach (angel). Yaacov saw in his dream that from the Am Yisrael (whom he represented) mitzvos would be created. These mitzvos would ascend the ladder and go all the way up to Hashem. Then they would come down again bearing in their hands blessings, benefits of happiness, success and prosperity for the people below... Hashem loads them with all good things, and they come down and they bring the hashpa'ah below.

What Unique Power Does the Torah Instill In You?

A boy asks his parent whether he can eat a particular chocolate bar. They look at the chocolate bar and say, "I don't think it is kosher."
If the boy then takes the bar, which costs him money, and throws it away, he is showing greatness. His seichel (mind) has overcome his materialism, his money, and his desire for physical gratification.

And so we see that the Torah is a spiritual force that gives us the impetus to be able to fight back against all the urges that make us act only in accordance with (own) [our] immediate desires.

What Can You Learn From Everything In the World?

Everything in this life is a parallel to the Afterlife. All joy that we experience is an intimation and foretaste of the great happiness to come. We sense the ecstasy of the Afterlife even now in a faint way and we yearn for it.

What Can You Learn From Chanukah?

Hashem wants us to teach ourselves not to fall in the great error of becoming infatuated with the other nations of the world...

The great lesson of Chanukah is that the people who caused us the greatest trouble were the misyavnim, the ones who fell in love with Greek culture and began to look down on their fellow Jews. They found fault with their own people.

Does Everything Have a Silver Lining?

"AND THE FAMINE WAS HEAVY IN THE LAND." (Bereshis 43:1)

It is noteworthy that Hashem utilized the phenomenon of famine to achieve great benefits for His people. Because of this famine, Israel went down into Egypt; and (because) they afterwards were redeemed from Egypt by G-d's open miracles, they became sufficiently inspired to receive the Torah at Sinai.

One of the lessons which we learn thereby, is that the apparent calamities (such as famine) are also part of Hashem's kindness, and they can be the means of bringing very great benefit.

"AND IT WAS WHEN THE ARK JOURNEYED, AND MOSHE SAID: 'ARISE HASHEM AND YOUR ENEMIES SHOULD BE DISPERSED'" (Bamidbar 10:35)

The enemies of Israel are the enemies of Hashem.. All who oppose the people of G-d, who that are His true servants, are enemies of G-d and opponents of His glory which Israel upholds: "All who rise up against Israel, are as if they rose up against the Holy One blessed is He" (Mechilta, Shmos 15:7). How Do You Teach Children About The World To Come?

When a child learns to give part of his money to charity, he is being thereby accustomed to the awareness of the World to Come. He should be told: You are not giving away your money by putting it into the Bank of the Afterlife, where it is safest and brings the greatest returns.

In proportion to whatever he gives, in that measure he gains belief in the Afterlife.

What Was The Purpose Of Living In Egypt?

"FOR I SHALL MAKE YOU A GREAT NATION THERE" (Bereishis 46:3)

This teaches that the exile in Egypt was not a random occurrence, or for chastisement. It was the "iron furnace" (Dvarim 4:20, Yirmiah 11:4) where the precious metal would become sufficiently refined to be worthy that "you should become My peculiar treasure above all the peoples" (Shmos 19:5).

Egypt was especially planned as a preface to Sinai. But the entire plan was based on the fact that the virtuous Joseph gained almost absolute power over Egypt, and under his wise leadership the "great nation" was enabled to come into existence.

Should You Look Forward to Hashem's Reward?

People are misled by the Mishnah that says, "Don't be like servants who serve their master for the sake of receiving a reward." That really means the reward should not be the only motivation. But certainly a person should hope for a reward. When he puts a mezuzah on his door he should desire a reward for it. When he says Krias Shema or Shemoneh Esrei, he should desire a reward for his actions.

What Do You Learn From Avraham?

The life of Avraham became a model for millions of his posterity in every generation. His deeds are recounted in the Torah-reading year after year, and they have been enumerated and handed down from generation to generation. Throughout the millennia, his descendants have followed the example of their first father's fiery devotion to G-d, prayer, kindliness, hospitality, selflessness, humility, meditation and self-control.

By What System Does Hashem Orchestrate History?

"AND YOU INTENDED HARM AGAINST ME, BUT G-D INTENDED IT FOR GOOD." (Breishis 50:20)

From this model which the Torah supplies we must learn that all harm which men or nature inflict upon the innocent is really intended by G-d for good.

But, in addition, we learn that Hashem purposefully conceals His Hand so that righteous men be tested to discern by their own efforts that whatever transpired was really the benevolent plan of Hashem. G-d made the world that it should "do" in a seemingly automatic manner of cause and effect, either in cycles or in random accident, in order to supply the virtuous with opportunity to discover the truth and thereby grow great.

These links in the chain of cause and effect which blind many from recognizing the hand of G-d, are the very best and most effective means of teaching the better men to see how G-d Himself is manipulating all events for His purpose.

געקריגן היינט פון הרב אברהם טיקאצקי.

Should Jews believe in UFOs, in unidentified flying objects?

This is not a Jewish question, but if you ask anybody, should he believe in it, and the answer is no. You believe in it only when it's proven. It could be that there are unidentified objects, but if they are floating around, if they are artifacts, if they are manufactured objects, then they come from someplace on this earth. There is no question that somebody on this earth has released them. No objects that are fashioned by intelligence are coming are coming from anyother place in space. There are no thinking intelligent beings in space - you can bet your pants on that.

Now I am willing to wager also that there is no life in space anywhere, but it's not a principle of the Emunah to say that. If you want to believe there are certain species of elephants someplace in space, go ahead. But no men or no thinking beings are anywhere in space, and it's as silly as could be.

‎Even according to the evolutionists, man ischas v'shalom the way they say, is the result of unimaginable lucky accidents. Billions, trillions of lucky accidents coincided, they say, to make man. So if you're going to say that the same number of lucky accidents happened another time in the history of the world? That's the lunacy of the science fiction writers.

So you can be sure there'll never beanything like a visitor from outer-space, if he does come he was already on this earth first.

How Did Pharaoh Prepare Yisroel for the Torah?

What greater gift could Hashem give anybody in this world that’s bigger than the Torah? But in order that they should accept the Torah they needed another gift as a prelude, and that was the gift of tzaros (suffering). And so Pharaoh was even more influential than Moshe Rabbeinu in getting them to accept the Torah.

On one of the tapes it was stated that most illnesses are caused by talking, and the person asks that I should elucidate.

Most illnesses are caused by emotional upset. It's well-known that a great many heart disease cases originate in emotional upset. When a person goes to a heart specialist, one of the first questions is, do you become angry easily or frequently. When you go to an eye specialist, he also asks that; because anger, oshso m'kaas einei, my eye is worn out from kaas. Kaas can ruin your eyes.

It certainly can cause chalila brain tumors, almost as much as a concussion! It can cause chalila diabetes, which we know. People from constant aggravation chalila contract diabetes; the metabolism is upset. It can cause a lot of things.

I know a man who killed his wife. She contracted cancer when she was young, because he was a vicious fellow, and she was a quiet woman that couldn't fight back. And he so ate up her vitals by his wickedness that she died young from cancer. No question in my mind that he was the cause.

Therefore most of these things come from emotional upset, but the emotions are upset more than anything else, by words. If people wouldn't argue, wouldn't talk, they wouldn't bite each other, then there would be a great deal less of emotional disturbances.

Most emotional disturbances come from mouth quarrels, more than would come from worries, from real things that bother a person's mind. And if people wouldn't talk, then there would be a great deal of good health in this world.

Do these tzaddikim who sold out to Hakadosh Baruch Hu in this world for the sake of the World to Come, do they actually enjoy this world less? Do they feel less keenly whatever pleasures life can afford, than someone who thinks he's going to be here for the next ten thousand years?

On the contrary! The man who knows that life is brief is the one who enjoys it most. That's a principle that never fails. The tzaddikim have more Olam Hazeh than anyone else.

Who are the ones that bored? Who are the ones who have to look for thrills? Who are the ones who are constantly unhappy unless they're on the go? The people who live for this world! Because they're not thinking of the end, it's endless.

Of course they wouldn't admit that, but subconsciously life will continue forever and ever, they don't want to consider that there' going to be an end, and therefore they're bored from the beginning. Whereas tzaddikim know that they have to hurry up and enjoy life. That's the reaction automatically of all those who are facing the prospect of Olam Habah. This world is a much happier world, and if you don't believe me then try it.

I will give you a simple experiment which I always tell you. When you walk by a cemetery it always cheers you up. It's unfailing, because the realization that life will come to an end makes you appreciate more keenly what you possess right now.

Therefore number one, the tzaddikim are tourists in this world and they enjoy this world much more sharply, with more zest than anyone else. You see tzaddikim don't get into cars Saturday night and chase around. People are looking for pleasures; tzaddikim have them! Tzaddikim don't have to drink for thrills. Yeshiva boys never take a shot in the arm, they have their thrills, they're happy with the Bais Hamedrash; there are thrills in the Bais Hamedrash. Even to walk from their house to the Yeshiva is to them fun, you never stopped to analyze it.

When a person understands that this world is only a temporary visiting place, he certainly gets much more out of it, whether he is aware of it or not.

And secondly and even more important, those who understand that life is purposeful are going to utilize it and accomplish, whereas those who don't know the purpose of life, they are going to lose out, waste that most precious gift that never again will be offered to them.

What Are Your Emotions For?

We must speak of Hashem’s love more than anything else. When people get together and talk about where they’ve traveled, or what kind of car or furniture they’ve bought, they’re wasting their emotions. These feelings of enthusiasm are given only for one purpose — “nagilah v’nismicha bach” (Shir Hashirim 1:4): to love Hashem and come as close as possible to Him.

ה' איש מלחמה (שירת הים)
יקימך ה' לו לעם קדוש כאשר נשבע לך כי תשמר את מצות ה' אלקיך והלכת בדרכיו (דברים כ"ח ט')

If it says Hashem Ish Milchomo, Hashem is a warrior, then doesn't that mean that we should emulate Him?

Certainly, and that's why when it was necessary Mattisyahu and his children became anshei milchomo and they gave their lives on the battlefield; every one of them died fighting for Hashem and his Torah. Or when you have to fight against the reformers, against liberals, against reshoim, against baalei toevah, you can't sit back and say it's none of my business, no!! You have to be ish milchomo!

You have to get up and battle! Doesn't mean with your fists, you won't accomplish much. You accomplish with letters, telephone calls to the City Councilman.

Certainly you have to do things, we have to be anshei milchomo. Hakadosh Baruch Hu wants it, milchemes hayeitzer, to battle with the yeitzer hara, certainly there is a lot to do.

One of the biggest ways of fighting with our enemies is to help yeshivas! Yeshivas are battalions where the soldiers are being trained in war. Certainly, we have to be ish milchomo! When you go out and you support - let's say families that are raising children in Eretz Yisroel, that they have 13 children - you're ish milchomo if you raise money for them.

Because anybody that is raising 13 children is raising a battalion that's going to wage war on the yeitzer hara, they're all frum children. That's the way to fight back.

Certainly you have to fight back, and that's why we have this moshol to be a model for us.

Would watching television be permitted for old women in nursing homes who have no other interests?

And the answer is, old women in nursing homes, would it be right for them to drink poison if they have nothing else to do? You have to realize that drinking poison is much more beneficial than watching television, especially for old people. A young person who watches television ruins his mind, it ruins his Neshama, but still there’s some hope left, maybe before he dies he'll repent and maybe he'll learn a lot of Mesilas Yeshorim and erase from his mind part of what he listened to, what he saw.

But old people just before they die, they have to purify themselves most, and when they pollute their minds in their last days, that's what they take with them to the Next World. They take all the Arayos, all the wickedness with them in the Next World. Not because they'll practice it, they’re too old to practice immorality, but they have it in their heads. Immorality in the head of an old man is the very worst thing.

Here's an old man, he can't go out in the street, you go to visit him in his house, he's sitting and looking at the television. Gevald! Gevald! His children are murdering him. He should say Tehillim in his last days, he should speak to Hashem in his last days, he should prepare himself. He's reading something that's dirty, or looking at dirty magazines, that the children brought up for the old folks to enjoy before they die. He's taking all that garbage with him in the Next World.

Old people especially have to prepare, and that's why television for old women in the nursing homes, is the very worst thing you can do to them.
