LESS THAN ONE WEEK FROM TODAY!
In less than one week from today, we will celebrate Rosh Chodesh Tammuz, inaugurating the last three months, or final calendar quarter, of the year. In a financial framework, the last quarter of the year is a time when people begin a review of the year, think about tax planning techniques, and consider what can be to improve the year’s final quarter, so that it ends more successfully, and starts the next year off on the right footing and in a positive mode and direction.. All the more so, of course, should we prepare ourselves for the last quarter of the pivotal year we are living in. We have a week to ponder and reflect—what have we accomplished thus far; where our goals are; what can/should we attain in the coming months. It is no coincidence that as the world slackens off in the summer, we energize ourselves and achieve—for our calendar--and our agenda, is simply very different!

Chazal teach that “Pischu Li Pehsach…”--open for Me an opening the size of the point of a needle, and I will open for you an opening which is the size of the Ulam’s opening in the Beis HaMikdash (the Ulam’s opening was 40 Amos, or at least 60 feet tall and 20 Amos, or at least 30 feet wide). The Kotzker Rebbe comments as follows: Hashem asks of a man to open his heart to the extent of a needle’s point. However, small as this may be, it must still be a needle’s point--needle-sharp--piercing through the material in its entirety. Whatever Teshuva we do must pierce through the very insides of our being--it must penetrate through and through. Hashem, in turn, will help us, so that our Teshuva will become more profound--to the point of an Ulam! We add simply that the opening of the Ulam is not only the largest opening that we can think of--but it is also the largest opening of the Beis HaMikdash. Through sincere Teshuva--we will see the opening of the Ulam in the Beis HaMikdash itself!

A person once remarked to Rav Yitzchok Hutner that the performance of certain mitzvos is too
difficult for him since they run counter to his nature and he is unable to change.
Rav Hutner responded by
likening the man’s argument to the case of a motorist speeding down the highway who suddenly sees
flashing lights in his rear-view mirror. He pulls over, and the policeman approaches and asks why he was
driving 83 mph on a highway with a speed limit of 50.
The man foolishly answers that he did nothing wrong, as the car was set to cruise control and he
wasn’t even the one driving at that speed. The officer dismisses his specious defense by noting that he
was the one to initially set the cruise control to an illegal speed. Similarly, when a person comes before
the Heavenly Court and attempts to justify his ways by noting that certain mitzvos ran counter to his very
essence, he will have a difficult time explaining who was responsible for creating within himself a nature
which runs counter to the Torah.
While every person has different mitzvos that specifically challenge him, the Mishnah in Avos
teach that the strong person is one who conquers his evil inclination (4:1) and that the harder a mitzvah is
for a person, the greater will be his reward for doing it (5:22), a lesson we should learn from the eternal
covenant of peace that Hashem gave to Pinchas for acting counter to his peaceful nature.

By Rav Eli Glaser of Soveya
The famous command to Avraham of, “וגו ךל ךל ',” encapsulates an essential element necessary for personal growth.

“Get out of your comfort zone!”

Avraham was asked to uproot himself from his geographic surroundings, his family ties and daily routine – from everything he knew and to which he was accustomed.

Or was he?

Avraham was chosen to be the founding father of the Jewish nation because he had chosen G-d. He extricated himself from his own comfort zone. He had the courage to stand alone (Ivri). Avraham had the clarity to realize that this world was not about chasing after temporary pleasures and finding the easier, softer way toward success.

Avraham’s relationship with HaShem was not like that of the idol worshippers around him, who treated their gods like a vending machine – attempting to come up with the right combination of offerings to produce their own desired outcome – akin to putting in the correct amount of coins to get the candy bar of choice.

Avraham knew that since there is an Infinite Creator, there is a design and plan for the universe and an Omnipotent Being that is running the show. HaShem is the constant and we are the variable, having to adjust our perceptions, feelings and desires to conform to His will for us – not to rationalize our yearnings into relative truth.

Avraham was the embodiment of chesed (kindness), not because he gave everyone what they wanted, but because he gave people the opportunity to elevate themselves beyond their daily existence.

He simply helped them enjoy the fruits of this world in the context of a greater purpose, not merely to satisfy an immediate desire. “Don’t thank me,” he would tell his guests after feeding them a nourishing meal. “Thank the al-Mighty who is the Real Provider. Have a relationship with Him.”

Eating to live, not living to eat.

Kindness starts at home. We have to show true chesed to ourselves by being willing to challenge ourselves, to break out of our comfort zones of complacency and habit – even if others around us are not. It’s not easy to end life-long behaviors. It’s hard to adopt new ways of thinking and acting. But the degree of difficulty doesn’t determine the validity of something. If it’s the right thing to do, we need to do it whether it’s easy or not.

As with Avraham, HaShem doesn’t give us any test we can’t pass. We already have all the requisite capabilities we need to succeed. We just need the courage to utilize them, and the willingness to break out of our own comfort zones. Then we can experience the true joys and pleasures HaShem puts in this world, and not settle for the “here and now”, which quickly turns into nothing more than the, “been there, done that.”

Good תבש.

אקומען פון ידידינו ר' מנחם שלו' MSP טויף בליץ פאסט
ווער האט חשק איבערשרייבען אויף אידיש?

Divrey Toiroh for Vayeitzei 5778

From this week’s Sedra we learn an important Halocho. In the general world this saying is known: “For this person I will go the extra mile”. This suggests that in truth one is not expected to do that, but because he feels that this person deserves it or because he likes this person, he will do a special good job.
However this is wrong. In truth Al Pi Toiroh a worker always has to go the extra mile. Actually the Rambam writes in Hilchos Sechirus as follows:
ונבכעי אלו ינע רכש לוזגי אלש ב"העב רהזומש ךרדכ
בייח אלא המרמב םויה לכ איצומו ןאכב טעמו ןאכב טעמ לטביו ב"העב תכאלמ לוזגי אלש רהזומ ינעה ךכ
It is known that the Rambam is not a Mussar Seifer. It is not a Seifer where Inyoney Chasidus and good Minhogim are recorded. Everything that is written in the Rambam is plain Halocho! If the Rambam learns from Yaakov that one has to work for the boss with one’s whole Koiach, then this is Halocho.
Actually we see in the sedra that Yaakov was a Noeh Doiresh and a Noeh Mekayem. In plain English this is translated as : “He practised what he preached”. When Yaakov arrived at the outskirts of Choron he saw the shepherds gathering around the well. He asked them: Where are you from? They answered : From Choron! He asked them : Do you know Lovon? They said : Oh Yes! He asked: Is peace with said : Peace. [Note! They did not say Peace is to him, they just said Peace, the Baal Haturim says that they knew that Lovon was a Rosho, and the Toiroh says אין שלום לרשעים, No peace for the wicked!] But then Yaakov tells them off: Excuse me! Why are you already retiring for the day? Don’t you have a job to do? It is yet high day!!
Now Yaakov himself indeed fulfilled this when he worked for Lovon. Day and night he ensured the safety and prosperity of the flock, even though Lovon abused him.
The Mido of Yaakov is Tiferes. Maybe we can suggest that this is why he was teaching everyone about Bein Odom Lachaveiroi. The Mishna says:
םדאה ןמ ול תראפתו הישועל תראפת איהש לכ ,םדאה ול רוביש הרשי ךרד יהוזיא ,רמוא יבר
So we see that Tiferes = Glory is what is pleasant to other people. The best way to achieve this is by being honest and faithful to other people.
We all know the difficulty of doing Teshuva for Bein Odom Lachaveiroi issues, more than for Bein Odom Lamokom, since we need to make things up with the other person and get Mechila.
There is an interesting Toisfos. On the one hand Chazal tell us that in the Other World we will be questioned by Beis Din Shel Maaloh in this order: ?הנומאב תתנו תאשנ Did you do business in good faith? Did you set times for learning Toiroh? הרותל םיתע תעבק
So it appears that the first judgment is for crooked business. However on the other hand Chazal tell us הרות ירבד לע אלא םדא לש וניד תליחת ןיא the first justice meted out is for Toiroh. How does that fit in with the first question being about business?
Toisfos answers that there is no contradiction! When it comes to interrogation the first question is about business, but when it comes to punishment then the first one is for Toiroh.
My great grandfather Reb Aaron Yaakov Porush ZTL asked that this appears to be illogical. Moh Nafshoch! If the first punishment is for Toiroh, let the first question then be about Toiroh?
He answered with an amazing insight. When one is accused with having run a crooked business, he has to make it up with the people he wronged. Once he has died and came to Beis Din Shel Maalo he can’t sort things out up there. But Hashem in his great mercy allows a person and gives him the opportunity to make things up, this by what is called Gilgul Neshomos. He goes back down and gets born again to be able and make amends.
So the first thing the Beis Din shel Maaloh has to establish is whether this man has unfinished business down below, therefore they ask him: was your business straight? Was your Bein Odom Lachaveiroi clean? If the answer is no, then Beis Din says Sorry! You have to go back down to sort things out! You are not yet ready for the justice in the Other World. However if the answer is Yes, then Beis Din Shel Maaloh says: If so then we can do business up here with you, and then the first question for justice up there is indeed How was your Toiroh learning!
The Zaida suggested that this may be an explanation in these pesukim: ?ושדק םוקמב םוקי ימו 'ה רהב הלעי ימ Who will go up and stay up there? בבל רבו םיפכ יקנ Someone who is clean in business!
There is a Remez Alef Beis Gimmel Dalet, Emunoh – Berocho, Gezeilo – Dalus, if one is honest ,he gets Berocho, and if Cholilo one steals, that brings poverty.
We see this in the final words of the Rambam mentioned above: הזה םלועב ףא תאז רכש לטנ ךכיפל since Yaakoiv was so honest in his work he took a reward even in this world.
May Hashem give us Berocho Vehatzlocho Vechol Tuv Selo and may we witness the Ge’ulo Sheleimo soon
