Today I came across an interesting word, "defenestrate". It means throwing something or someone out of the window. I think it might have a German
influence, as it might have to do with the Yiddish word for window. To de"fenster"ate, the act of removing the window. ----------- But I am not sure.

The Etymology

What are you referring to? the etymology? I made a guess, and let it be known that it was a guess.
Following your link, it shows that one of the roots is the latin word "fenstra" which means Window or opening, The German word Fenster also traces back to the Latin fenstra, so I wasn't that off.

The definition? Merriam-Webster gives the following definition for defenestration

1. a throwing of a person or thing out of a window

It lists defenestrate as the transitive verb for defenestration

I found a good explanation of the difference between a topic and a thread

What’s the difference between a discussion thread and topic?
A forum is equivalent to a folder which contains a collection of one or more discussion topics. You post to discussion topics and each post within the topic is called a thread.

For example:
Forum: Classroom Introductions
Topic 1: Where were you born?
Thread 1: Alice: I was born in Germany
Reply to Thread:
Bob: I was born in Germany too! Where in Germany were you born, Alice?
Thread 2: Chuck: I am from California, USA.
Topic 2: Why are you interested in this course?
Thread 1: Dan: I love learning about science!

Yes I think it sounds right. However different software call different things differently, It should be software specific. You wouldn't call a WhatsApp group a channel, or a Slack channel a group. In the case of phpBB, I think Topic is correct

Here's my opinion, whether the official terminology is Topic, Post, Thread, etc., or something else. In the end of the day, how it is commonly referred to by the vast majority of English speakers, that's what truly matters.

Having said that,

Ashkol = Thread
First Teguvah = Post
The rest of the Teguvahs = Comments

In my opinion that's the correct terminology since that's how it's referred to by English speakers.

In our case however, most comments are not related to, and for sure not corresponding to the first post. Hence, all of them should share the same name. Either Post(s) or comment(s).

In our case though, we have got ourselves a dilemma. Since some posts/comments initiate a new topic/conversation, and some posts/comments are in response to the aforementioned posts/comments, then calling them all posts or all of them comments would sound weird.

I suppose there is no clear standard in our case scenario. It would just be silly to distinguish and refer to some posts as posts, and to others as comments.

Perhaps we just settle and call them all comments? I think it's better than posts.

The only reason I personally stick to Posts is because this is it's technical name and indeed how it is referred to in the iVelt system.

I think perhaps we can look at it from a different angle. We can try to translate the terms used in Yiddish. In that case אשכול becomes thread, and תגובה becomes comment. Even though those are not exact translations, they fit better than post and topic.

I'm surprised at how well most of you guys express yourself in English, just from reading your comments in this thread one could think that you are all

yankees from birth (okay maybe I'm exaggerating a little...) while your Yiddish comments show that you are all real kochenyu (fish sauce) yiden and some of you even more than that.

I know I'm quite surprised myself. You know, until I was 20 I didn't speak more then 50 words in English, but I had to learn the language of the country, so if you're gonna learn something, you might as well learn it right and fully.

I learned the hard way at first. I worked at a mid-sized company where no one spoke Yiddish but me, and I barely knew how to utter 2 sentences with proper grammar. I was laughed at, and not because people were mean, since most of the time they did their best not to laugh. But I suppose sometimes it was just too funny for them to hold it in, and they laughed in my face.

I rode it out, and after about a year I finally spoke English properly, my co-workers came to respect me for pulling through, and eventually I learned how to write well too.

That was a little over 10 years ago. I don't work there anymore. But that's part of my story.

I'll be honest with you when I said "even more than that" I meant you, from your other comments it seems like you come from a real satmer background probably living in Williamsburg or KJ and yet you have a real good English, even better than a lot of borough park people that speak english at home

my English grammar is not the best, even after taking grammar classes and reading tons of English books and more, I am not comfortable when I have to speak to a costumer in English, I wish I had an opportunity to talk more with native English speakers
