Fifteen members of New York State’s Congressional delegation are pushing hospitals to adopt programs that would allow patients with coronavirus to receive visitors who could be prioritized through proven immunity.
In a May 6 letter, the members of Congress wrote to urge hospitals to create Compassionate Companion Volunteer Programs to “connect patients with their loved ones while they are hospitalized and to provide companionship for those patients without family members available.”

“These Compassionate Companions programs will identify individuals who can aid in non-medical, quality-of-life activities to ease a patient’s and their family’s loneliness due to separation,” the letter states. “Companions can assist patients to connect with loved ones via phone calls or video chats and provide direct support in times of need.”
The letter, which was signed off on by Reps. Nydia Velazquez, Hakeem Jeffries and Max Rose, argues the programs would also provide “much-needed relief” to frontline workers, who have taken on the role of comforters as well as providing medical care.
It’s addressed to the Greater New York Hospitals Association, which represents city hospitals, and the Healthcare Association of New York State, which represents upstate hospitals.
State and city lawmakers are also pushing for similar measures.

The family of a COVID-positive man at Mount Sinai Hospital on the Upper East Side told the Daily News such a move could not come soon enough. The man, whose family asked not to publish his last name, was admitted with coronavirus a week before Passover. His daughter Ellen Heller of Borough Park described torturous calls in which her dad begged to see his family.

Coronavirus in New York: The state continues to face the impact from the pandemic
His son, David, said he was finally allowed to see his father when staff said he didn’t have much longer to live. But his father is still alive, and David attributes his improved condition to having contact with a loved one.
“I saw this relaxed expression on his face as I was talking to him,” he said. “It’s a matter of saving lives, 100 percent, no question about it."
